I never enter DPC contests because I'm too busy shooting weddings and portraits, but I happened to catch this week's challenge and I'm glad I saw it before I shot the wedding.

This wedding was for friends. The bride is the ultrasound technician that discovered we were going to have twins (born 18 months ago) in an after-hours courtesy ultrasound. Almost all my other friends were at or in the wedding.

I had a set-up PJ shot in mind but event timing and such prevented us from shooting it. Genuine unscripted moments like this are better anyway :) I don't expect this to score well compared to setup PJ shots but it's worth a try. This one works well as a B&W because the white balance was off anyway. Plain desaturate, resize to 800px wide, then simple "Sharpen" in PS CS4.

The bride and groom were standing in deep shade for the ceremony, which is why I shot at ISO800, around f/4 and 1/80th sec shutter speed. I normally shoot manual, but because of the huge change in light I shot the exit in Aperture priority (Av) mode. The camera saved my butt exposure-wise. There was about a 5 stop difference in light.

It's a nice picture, but a wedding isn't news.

Good photo. Shame about the tent growing out the groom's head though.
