Hunter jumper show in Estes Park, CO.

Captured image as JPG file.

Because of the harsh sunlight, I used a polarizing filter. In the morning hours, I was shooting 90 degrees to the sun. It was possible to sustain a fast enough shutter speed for this action ahot, even though the polarizing filter cost me about 1.5 camera stops.

In JPG mode, my camera allows me to set "picture stye" parameters, which I set to sharpness +5, contrast +1, saturation +2, color tones 0.

One resizing. Sharpened in Apple's Aperture with "Sharpen" brick. Intensity +0.68; radius +3.41.

No other editing applied, as per minimal editing rules.

Did not convert colorspace from aRGB to sRGB.

[Aug. 14th, 2010 09:08:46 AM]

Tripod mount. Manual focus preset to exact DOF plane over top bar. Remote shutter release cable. Image precomposed for approximate action capture at leap apogee. (The rider and horse didn't quite hit my optimal mark, but pretty close.)
AutoWhiteBalance. Evaluative metering.

My error was using the default sharpening brick in Aperture. Because that tool allows slider adjustments, it was deemed to be illegal. The image didn't need to be sharpened at all. It was my mistake to use a sharpening tool which could be adjusted.

I forgot the minimal editing rules when I suggested this would look better cropped... of course that would not have been permitted to I take it back!

Shame on the DQ though.

This is a great action shot and one of my top picks. I've taken photos at these events and I know how easy it is for the horse's head to obscure the rider's or for pose to not be quite right, which makes these shots more difficult to get than people might otherwise think. You've nailed the pose on this shot and the technicals are excellent (it is so easy to blow the highlights on the abundance of bright white around on these events).

Disappointed to see 8 threes in the scoring, maybe because of the title? I didn't know overleap was a word, but a quick check whilst I was voting confirmed it is totally legitimate so I learned something too!

Great action shot, but I would have preferred the right hand side to be cropped more pushing the horse over the right of the frame so as to seem to be jumping more into the frame.
