This was taken on a saturday, so for sure this little girl does not have schooling on that day, maybe she just found this bag from the trash and decided to play with it. But we can't hide the fact that from the environment she's at, her future looks bleak.

Taken at a place called Ulingan (Uling means Charcoal) in Tondo, Manila. I missed photographing her when she first walked by, and almost missed her again as she came back, this is the sole shot I had of her.

Hello,

I am a big fan of Zoriah Miller's work. He does a lot of disaster photography and work capturing the images of what Sociologists have called "the underclass". There's a lot of sad beauty (as well as a call to spiritual arms so to give care and love) in the shoots of Zoriah or Lange or this one.

You've done a great job with this photo - it looks excellent. I particularly like how it seems the girl and her bag are separated from the background, how you've pulled them forth.

Thank you for a good job!

Thank you very much!

Positives: I knew I'd seen this image before - it stuck in my mind (I remembered her bare feet in the mud) and I checked back on 1x and there it was. It is truly great work though, the figure, the scene, the depth you have preserved - all the way back to the background wreckage; all make for a fantastic, sensitive, thought provoking piece. I also like the way she is walking towards a dark place in your image, reinforcing the metaphor in your title with photographic luminosity.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all.

Overall: I expect to see this on the front page. An easy 10 from me to help it on its way.

Thanks Paul for this wonderful comment.

So compelling, tragic. Almost hard to give this a critique or a score.

Very sad, but quite good documentary photography. Just a glimpse more of her face would have helped a lot.

Looks like a little girl in a war torn country. Nice high contrast B&W.
