Okay, I'm breaking my own rule here. No green in this beauty.

It's a blue humpback whale that was eating krill in Monterey Bay Saturday, 7/31/2010. I couldn't enter it in the July Free Study because I didn't have the tools to process it down there.

Still, I just had to show it off, so here 'tis.

Yes, those 'teeth' are on its upper jaw.

(edited to add) One of the nice things about this site is that people help you out with identification problems. On our small boat trip we did see both blue and humpback whales. I mixed them up in this picture. It is indeed, a humpback (not a blue) and thanks to paulbtlw for gently pointing that out.

I'm glad you put the notes up. I'm not sure I would have recognized the whale as a whale let alone humpback or blue. My ignorance, not your photography. 8)

So that's what baleen look like. They used to make knitting needles out of them/it.

WOW alica .. i cant imagine how exciting it'd be to take a shot like this .. look at the pointy bits .. its so interesting .. is it upside down? ..
