This is not my original idea. I saw this image, about one year ago, that used an older child to depict divorce, with the two parents pulling her hair in each direction. That image has stayed with me for along time. I actually was not going to enter this challenge, but at three hours before roll-over, there are only 54 entries. I called my family into the studio, and we took four pictures. That is it. Thankfully, I have a very understanding husband and daughter.

I know this was posted a while ago. I just stumbled upon this site. I signed up just to post a comment on your photo. I love this photo I think it has a lot of emotion behind it. One reason I like it is because it kind of looks like a high school picture. If I looked back at my high school pictures around the time my parents were getting divorced and id say my expression was about the same. Awesome photo.

I like yours better. It is more realistic, which, to me, strikes home more.

This is nicer then the original/so sad that so many children are caught in the middle of divorced parents. The child is almost always the loser.

Powerful! congratulations...the expression is amazing

I actually prefer this to the original. There seems to be more of the emotion of a child caught between, as opposed to the glamour photo shoot feel of the original. (And checking the other comments, I see I am not very original in my comment!)

great metaphor (even if it is not yours), and the usual fabulous execution. Congrats, Jennifer!

Great image!! Congrats on your Red Ribbon. It is sad that marriage is so disposable now.

What a great emotional shot. And I also agree this shot is better then the original. Yours has more of a sad, despaired look to it. More emotion then the one you took inspiration from.

Congratulations Jennifer!! I agree too, the expression, lighting and composition are all better than your inspiration one.

Great shot. I too prefer this to the original because of the understatement . Despite what can often be termed as terible emotional abuse children can be so gentle and forgiving. For me you have captured the essence of that here. Congratulations +++++

Like Dr Achoo I also prefer this to the original - it is much more understated and powerful.

Hey Jenn. Another ribbon! (yawn) I like your shot better than your inspiration. The original model is far too made up to feel real and I like the horizontal tension of the hands in your picture than the vertical tension of the original. It's always interesting to see inspirations for photos and there's nothing wrong with that! Thanks for sharing.

I think the essence of the title is well brought in your image, if I have to compare it with the original... Big congrats on your ribbon, Jennifer!

I gave this a 10. It had a lot of impact on me. :)

Yours is perfect. Your model is so good at each image she's in. You're blessed to have her... but I suspect you know that. :)

Way to go Jennifer! I like your image better by far on many points. Congrats on the Red!

I too think yours is better - but you are far too modest. I didn't vote but would have given this a high score as I love it! Way to go team Short!!

The original is definitely inferior. Without the title, I wouldn't have particularly understood the concept. It's almost more like a stage mom fighting with an agent--the eye makeup is so out of line with the story.

Yours looks like an unhappy child.

Yours is definitely better -- far superior! Congrats on a beautifully done red!

Thanks for sharing your inspiration as well as your doubts, but really this is a superior photo. Congratulations on the ribbon. My only suggestion (pardon the nitpicking) would be to have the woman's hand and arm look more obviously female. Maybe a bare arm, or polished fingernails -- not to the point of cliche, but something so the his/her aspect is more visually apparent.

I agree with the others who say that your shot is better than the one that inspired you. The girl in the other shot looks more like an adult, and your daughter's expression does a much better job of telling the story than the other girl. And I think your choice of toning works a lot better than the color used in the other shot. Congrats on the red... this was a very rare 10 from me.

I also think your image is better; although I can see why the orginal image inspired you.
In your image the expression of the model seems to be more of what I think children would really feel when it comes to divorce; the hands in your image look as if they are actually pulling and the black and white makes this one really come across.

Way to go!! This was one of the best by far. Congrats.

Agree this is better than the original for two reasons: your daughter is younger, and she is not wearing ridiculous fashion-y makeup. It looks more 'real' or 'normal'. Congratulations on the ribbon.

I certainly like yours better too.

"I think hers is a gazillion times better. This image had alot of impact on me when I saw it."

In my opinion you are incorrect. Your image has much more impact than the original just based on the expression of model and her age. Congratulation on another wonderful image.

Actually, I disagree with you that the inspirational shot was a gazillion times better. I like YOUR rendition far more! Your daughter's expression is much more in line with the story you are trying to portray with this shot. I think that the original was more of a model look and didn't have the impact that yours does! :)

Congrats on the red!
I also think that yours is better. There is more emotion. In my opinion the exaggerated eye makeup takes away from the emotion in your inspiration shot.
Yours is simple and brilliant :-)

Did not disappoint me. I had this pegged for the blue, but I see there was only a thin hair separating the blue and red this time. First rate shot illustrating a very real issue that I have unfortunately been party to.

Congrats Jennifer - it was so very close!

It might have been the other artist's idea, but honestly, I like your execution better.

Wow, different take on this challenge; very outside the box. Very provocative composition with the daughter's ponytail as the instrument of the tug of war, and leaving the parents out of the picture except for their arms. It certainly makes one think of how divorce affects the child(ren). Very provocative with the sadness portrayed in the girl's eye's. Technically well done, presented very well as the "antithesis" of family. I think this deserves a 10 as a thought provoking image.
