Great-horned owl with owlet.

[Jun. 6th, 2010 07:38:00 PM]

Some people are commenting about slight OOF. I'm not sure this is true, as the owls look sharp to me. I could have added an additional USM filter pass, but it would have had the unintended consequences of creating oversharpening artifacts. The people who said "slight OOF" are not experienced photographers. They may actually be looking at the narrow DOF in the bg and fg and thinkint the subject is somehow OOF. This is a crop of a telephoto image. It really doesn't get any better than this from the 75' of distance. I think, too, that the zoo images and rehab tethered birds in confinement tend to spoil the perspective of observers of nature photography.

eta: LOL!!!! That kenskid and his best "buddy", rugman1969 are a hoot! I just ignore them. They are not to be taken seriously in any way. Interesting, though, how they seem to act in concert.

I gave this a 6. At first I thought this may be a shot from a "captured" owl.

I wish I could understand the science surrounding the blue/green/purplish fringe around bright objects when using zoom. What causes that?

Nice editing richard, but do we really need to start with the 'zoo shot' thing again?

Congrats on top 10 finish Richard! Well done with a great natural image. I think it looks just fine. I'm very impressed that you can find subjects like this.

Wow what a stare, if it had been slightly sharper it would be outstanding!

I really like the idea here, and a great capture. I do wish it were ever so sharper. Looks like the focus ended up at the front of the nest instead of the eyes. Still, it's really cool.
