Mondo beautimus, dude! This is gorgeous.

I hope to someday create art of the caliber of this piece. Anyone can be a photographer, but to make something that is truly artistically appealing makes you into a real artist.

So I guess you should accept the compliments that you are, in fact, an artist. :-)

Heida,

Though I did not enter or vote in this challenge I am not the least bit surprised by your win. You need not look any further than just the second comment made on it by Kiwiness as proof it deserved the blue... "Tres fantastique !! (10)".

I have great admiration for your work. Steve

I don't understand some of the responses here. Some of you are displaying your ignorance. This shot is not edited any more than usual, and this is not a "painting". This looks like a really well done hand tinted black and white photograph. What is the big deal.

Even if this photo were only in black and white, it would still be a really good photo. It displays emotion, which is probably one of the hardest things to capture. Heida has a very good eye for photography, and is a very good photographer despite what some of the comments say.

As far as the comments go about being an artist as opposed to a photographer, that is a major compliment. Hopefully we will all graduate from just being a photographer to becoming more of an artist.

Nice work Heida, always look forward to seeing your work.

Ansel Adams dodge and burn to make teh scene more realistic. I.e. he wouldn't dodge it until the color changse, or to create cloud effects. This is a nice photo but it is approaching digital art.

It is great art. I guess we have to look at these examples like Ansel Adams landscape photos. Those photos ARE NOT straight out of his camera, he pioneered darkroom techniques that would be the equivalent of dodging and burning. Because it's done on a computer and not in a lab, does that make it any less legit? That's just an example, I'm actually not on either side of the debate.

It's a very nice piece of art, but the high amount of editing makes it look more like a painting now. Still, nice work.

Heida, this picture is stunning! Two in a row, congratulations.
Vision is the difference between and average photogragher (like me, below average actually) and a real artist. Keep up the good work!

I had said some negative things to djtj, but edited it when I realized how new he was to the site, as my comments were about judging others when you yourself had not put your own work out to be judged. I hope that you get involved in the site and see why the site council(through much debate) decided to allow the members challenges to be post edited in this way. I think it was a good decision, as was the decision to leave the open challenge with the limited editing rules. Now we get to see the whole range of talents of the photograghers on this site, IMHO.
Anyway, enjoy the site, it is really an awesome one!

The picture that comes to mind is no longer available here at dpc... Only the excellent one is. I'm talking about the June free study vinner.

The Silence picture is more a photo manipulation than a photo in my mind.
And how can a marineblue picture win the color purple challenge?! Parts of the fabric is Purple-ish I admit. Other parts is not(in my eyes on my monitor).
With this level of photo manipulation why not just shoot a grey cloth, select it and tweek it into purple?

If you take this further why not take a photo, turn it into b/w, send it to a graphic artist of choice and let him/her paint it in pretty colors in Photoshop or Painter?

Is this what we want? Is this really in the spirit of this photography contest?
07/12/2004 04:47:11 PM
Wow Heida... Great shot Oh and by the way now you know how professional athletes feel when some moron heckels them from the crowd.!!! The really good ones just go about their business as if the jerk wasnt there.

And a special note to djtj. Even if thats the way you feel, why not try observing for a while and learn some things before you make a fool of yourself.

I never said, nor do I claim to be an expert in photography. What I am saying is that anybody can take a bad picture and make it a good one with do time. For example, the original angel picture that this photographer took was extremely underexposed and really was a boring, non-eye catching picture. (it may have intentianal to do what was needed to be done to make it a good picture) But with time and nice photo program for your computer it can easily become a nice picture. In my mind the whole challege of photography is to capture a nice picture, not create one.
07/12/2004 02:49:25 PM
Well, I'm still failry new to the site and so this was the first time i've had a chance to view your work. Now I know what all the fuss is about! This photo was remarkable imho and every element in it totally worked. I voted an 8 and am glad to see it win a ribbon.... congrats! : )

This looks like a Heida photo, very deep and expressive. Good use of desaturation to play up the purple. It seems like there are some brownish tones in the shroud that take away from the purple, but otherwise very nicely done.

The face is so compelling -- mysterious. The muted cloth adds so much to the feel. The blur in the water/rock distracts a bit but the sky is wonderful. One of my ribbon picks.

i really like this, but with the desaturation, it made the material not so purple..and the border is a little heavy.. but its still probably one of my favs in the challenge
  Photographer found comment helpful.
07/09/2004 10:23:20 PM
Superb use of desaturization. Excellent scene - great light (or post processing) on your model's face. Sky and background is moody but works perfectly. White line in the border is minimal but still not needed. This should score very high.

07/09/2004 01:43:52 PM
Good pic, but the color purple is not the subject. The women is the subject, and the title suggests that she reflecting is silence. This doesn't have too much to do with the color purple.

Good portrait overall, but the image has a bit of digital noise on my monitor. I like the frame.

very nice emotive photo....I like the gray tones and the muted purple. The little color in this photo is not over the top. I also like the way you composed the photo with the main subject off to the side. I'm giving this photo a 10

07/07/2004 03:21:26 PM
Breathtaking. I would have prefered an angle that didn't show the rocks in the foreground, or that blurred them. But the composition is wonderful. I love the desaturation of the background also. This will be in the top 10 for sure.

Subtle, subtle, subtls... I love this one. The purple shawl works so well as the only colored item in the image. To me there is a quality of sadness along with the silence and contemplation. Beautifully done. A 10.
