 I wanted to do something a bit tricky with the natural indoor lighting. I have seen a lot of smoke/steam photos, but most of the time they have bright flashes or studio lights to make the smoke/steam visible.

My setup included coffee cup on coffee table (on a light tan pillow case to reflect some light up) filled with coffee beans. Behind the cup was a candle that I would blow out before the shot to get smoke (steam). Light came from early morning sunshine through front windows of the house. I used a large piece of shiny insulation for reflecting a very small amount of light onto the front of the cup.
