Met up with Jeger and VitaminB to take some pictures from the top of my building in Toronto (38th floor). Was looking to do something a little different from my 2009-12 Free study, so I tried a zoom technique during the last few seconds of the exposure. I have to say I love the effect. We'll see how DPC responds to it. I hope I don't get crushed because the sky isn't black!

Wow! Checking this morning before work and I had a 7.2727 with 33 votes. Will it last?

[Mar. 18th, 2010 03:19:31 PM]
115 vote check-in. Was down at 6.9, but has clawed it's way back to 7.1043. This could be a new PB!

Yes! 150 vote check in. Back exactly where I was on Wednesday morning!! 7.2727

[Mar. 20th, 2010 10:34:30 AM]
New high 7.3176.

[Mar. 21st, 2010 02:28:46 PM]
200 votes, 7.3450. I can't believe this keeps going up! I'm going to crush my previous PB.

250 vote check in: 7.3000

Thanks everyone for the great comments all week! Never thought this would be anywhere near ribbon territory :) Had a great week watching this go up and down!

Setup: for the shot I had my camera mounted on a tripod with a focal length of 17mm. I don't own a remote at the moment, so I used the 2s delay option to trigger the shutter, which was set to 20s. I counted in my head to 18, and then turned the zoom slowly/evenly to bring the shot to roughly 30-35mm. I tried to time it so that when I got to 30mm+ the shutter would close. Since it was taking 20s to get the exposure, in the last 2 seconds only the lights would come through and nothing else (ie no double buildings). I have a few shots where I ended up with 2 CN towers and doubles of the other buildings, but I was able to correct this by waiting longer in the shot to do the zoom.

Congrats on your Red ribbon! Great looking scene and I'd love to know how you did this - my zoom shots always blur almost everything!

Congrats! I really liked the zoom effect. How did you manage to zoom the lens without introducing camera shake to the image?

lol, love how you were glued to the 'refresh' button all week! :) I could just see you pulling a Homer with that bobbing bird hitting the F5 key all day :D

Way to go on your first ribbon, well deserved for sure! I'll bring my Pentax next time and see if I can pull it off remotely close... could be tricky with film tho!

interesting way of applying zoom blur to the shot. A lot more subtle and effective than other attempts I've seen. (especially my own!) Congrats on the ribbon!

this is a terrific effect - a short zoom midway thru the exposure?
There's some tough competition in this challenge so good luck.

good idea of using a zoom burst, it really draws your eye to the tower. There is only one trail that you might want to remove (if it was advanced ed) is the white one that goes into the building on the right.
