 For those who are interested:

The key to the close up view was a combination of a 105 mm macro lens and Kenko extension tubes.

Regarding lighting, the photo was taken inside, the subject faced the window to get some daylight, and an SB800 flash was attached to the camera to provide the rest of the light.

The key processing step was to desaturate red and magenta, with a mild increase in saturation of yellow and blue -- done with Hue/Saturation layers.

The entry was validated whie voting was still ongoing.

Although I get the creeps of an eye shot that close and wide open this way, I vote in function of the technical aspects. Sharp from left to right, bottom to top. The skin in b&w, the eye ball slightly coloured and the iris full colour: perfect job.

Very nice. Love this and it makes me stare and stare and stare. The flash doe sbother a bit in the black but nothing you can do about that. It's just amazing looking at this and trying to understand how this works. 8
