Summer vacation 2009 ... wandering around Venice in the morning while the others slept, I rounded a corner and came upon this piazza still in shadow with the rising sun lighting up the church steeple in the courtyard beyond. Beautiful scene, quickly disappearing as the rising sun moved lower and lower on the buildings. As I was shooting, this couple towing their suitcases came round the corner and walked through the courtyard, adding a nice touch to the empty scene. Not bad sharpness for handheld at 1/20 either.

Don't think this one will do as good as it could, because it loses a LOT of detail at 800px. Played around with Topaz a bit to try to bring some of it back, which I'm sure will irritate as many voters as it pleases. :)

As for the tourists, the normalcy of them was my point ... you see tourists like that all around Venice, trolling bags over cobbled streets past beautiful buildings and light with nary a glance. I do have other shots with nobody in them, but I like this one better.

Exactly!! And it is not just Venice and not just tourists. Europe to those who don't live there is a "picture postcard" but to those who DO live there it is just home. And perfectly normal to have people with suitcases or briefcases walking through many centuries old arches. Or lovely Mercedes Benz cars parked in front of ancient castles. Anyway, I like this a lot. :-)

Love the light on the steeple, I agree, tourists add interest for me.

I really like this, and the tourist do add quite a bit! Did you try cropping it in? When I scrolled down to enter this comment, I stopped when the sky disappeared and it just made me say "wow!!" The top part is so interesting, so I never would have thought about cropping it out, but when it scrolled off, the result was really interesting, I just had to share it.

Anyway, fun spot and wonderful capture!

The wide angle works. Lots to look at here. I do wish the foreground were better lit.

a holiday snapshot really...the people in the image with their luggage are a distraction...not the kind of image that would win a ribbon for photo of the year, but a nice snap for your photo album

a few more seconds and the travelers would be out of the picture. IMO your exposure is to dark

I'm not usually a fan of wide angle distortion but it's very cool here. Nice job.

Good light management in high contrast conditions, though the foreground is a bit flat and dark.
Good idea to include people, but these ones are definitely too much tourists.
With a little step toward the right, you could have separated more clearly the cross from the bell tower.
Globally, still a nice-looking image.
