Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Powerlines (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D300s
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4.0G IF-ED
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: Dec 6, 2009
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/250
Date Uploaded: Dec 6, 2009

Part of the power grid on the lakefront in Burlington, Ontario. The Burlington Bridge is in the distance, by Alex' right knee. They are actually supposed to remove these pylons and bury the cables in a major reconstruction of the waterfront area. They really are eyesores here. The area behind the camera and unseen here is Spencer Smith Park, where some other (long-delayed) reconstruction is happening, and it looks much nicer.

100% desat in Lightroom, adjusted tone curves, and added split toning. The vignette is natural, from that very awesome 12-24mm Nikkor. Cloned out some dirt from the lens, and cleaned up the flare a bit. A bit of dodge/burn on the rocks.

Beautiful shot, Louis...congratulations on a well-deserved ribbon, love the duotone processing and the sunburst. How you were able to keep the lines from going jagged after sharpening will forever be a mystery to me. Missed you at the Toronto GTG.

edit: a 'b' for an 'm'. Silly be me.

I like the composition with the person in the pic. It gives the picture depth and balances the picture. IMO. The tones are nice too. I like your decision to shoot into the sun; it keeps everything in silhouette. For a subject matter of "powerlines", this is presented very well.

I think this is the only power line shot with a human in it! Nice concept, love the texture of the water and the "star" sun. This is a beautiful shot but does not feature power lines prominently. They do not make or break the shot. This would have been equally powerful (to me) without them.
