I was warned that this photo would not go over well, and it Probably won't. It's not what people expect in a landscape challenge. It is a very real landscape, however. One that exists in too many places. I probably put way too much work into this for the score it's going to achieve, but I like the point it makes.

-HDR in photomatix basic from 3 JPG exposures.
-Tweaked in half the plugins I own. Nik color Efex, Topaz detail, topaz adjust. Some PaintShop Pro Clarify as well.
-Lots of selective editing to get the sky as smooth as I could and to get the tire detail to stand out.
-I'm very pleased with the composition. I find my eye starts with the tire in the foreground and follows an s-curve up to the line of trees in the background.

I think I did decently with this, but it is not what people are expecting for a landscape challenge, and probably does not have enough visual impact to overcome that. Anticipating a low 5 or high 4 average, with some positive comments from a few folks that appreciate seeing something different. A success for this entry will be to pull in a good amount of comments.

Anticipated critiques:
-DNMC, this shot is about the pollution and tires, not the landscape.
-Horizon is too centered top to bottom.
-Too dark
-Banding/blotchiness in the sky

Come one low voters, bring it on!

Post-challenge notes:
Ended up doing quite a bit better than I anticipated, though it still had it's share of low votes. The very high commenters average (8.1, wow!) tells me this really hit a nerve with some folks. This came in with only a high mediocre average, but was still a very successful entry for me, because it hit it's target audience.

I also want to point out for those folks who feel it is not fair to vote in the challenges that one enters, that the participant's average vote for this entry was a moderate amount higher than the non-participants.

Wonderful grim composition. Nice change from the usual 'pretty' landscapes. 8

A grim landscape indeed and very effectively captured and processed to confront the viewer with this unpleasant reality. 10

A modern landscape...this photograph just proves that there are pictures everywhere, beautiful pictures everywhere. Yes, it's garbage, but it's the light that lends the appeal. And the crescendo of the treeline is a nice accent. A welcome break from ultraviolet skies and crunchy grass.

The harsh contrast helps with the harshness of your subject ... good work here

Great visual statement underscored by the title. Great decision on the use of B & W. A good photojournalist shot.

Yes, it does, sometimes. Not all landscapes are pretty, particularly not when manmade. Perspective and B&W presentation work well. Might have cropped tighter so the trees (weeds?) progressed up and out of the frame, but the abrupt and visually disconcerting transition is probably more appropriate for the subject. Nice work.

I really like the message you are sending with your shot. The right hand side looks a little bit funny to me how the trees just stop so I would have cropped tighter on that side as the sky is so bland.

lol
This literally made me lol when I saw it. The title drew me in to see what the hell all the clutter was- and that's what it was, cluttered crap.
Interesting take on things, and food for thought.
