love the shots & definitely worth a blue. Although I agree with most here that the outtake is the better of the two purely because of the very defined body lines. superb lighting. well done!

Larus

Wonderfully shot, both pictures. You would have captured blue on either, but like you I loved the outtake better! As far as comments on your model, unwarranted she us stunning!

Thanks for sharing!

I love the mastery of DOF that you are demonstrating. I like the tone.

As far as the model is concerned, I expect super fit athletes would have their ribs pop out in this pose as well. It doesn't bother me. I do think that the comments are geared to a stereotype that models starve themselves to stay thin, etc., and to that end, we should lay off the model.

In this pose, combined with that gaze, and the overall tone of the image, I can understand some of the comments regarding death. It really adds to the scene.

ETA: I agree with the comment of Andreas about the left eye. Since it's not dodged, it must be the consequence of sharpening and is consistent with the multiple highlights of the sand. If masked, I wonder if the perception of some of the voters would change, as I doubt it pops that much in a larger image or print.

BTW, congrats on the Blue!

the pose looks uncomfortable, awkward, and forced.

You assume incorrectly, the only spot editing I did on her face (and her body for that matter) was to remove a strand of hair from her cheek and a little sand from her feet. Thx for taking the time to comment!

Beautiful nude, congratulations on the blue ribbon !! My only observation pertains to the way her eyes were processed. I am not sure that you enhanced the white of her right eye though I suspect you did and perhaps a bit too much for my taste.

As for her left eye, considering that only natural, cloudy day, extra-soft light was used, I cannot understand how you could possibly be able to see the white of that eye with such intensity, almost like a catch light. It seems to me that she would look more natural were it not for that detail, even when it amounts to no more than a pixel or two in the final picture.

I was intrigued by those who commented on how she looked as if she was 'dead', she doesn't to me, but in trying to decipher the reasons for their perception, I suppose her pose may have something to do with it; in addition, her left eye may be contributing to such illusion as well. If you try covering her left eye with your little finger, she suddenly looks more natural and far from 'dead', at least to me.

This is an amazing shot Larus, awesome. In fact one of the best I have seen here on DPC.

I also can't believe it when people comment on the model, it's ridiculous and insulting. I do wonder if you shot a large naked woman whether the same people would say, "great photo but make your model go on a diet LOL." They probably wouldn't because they would know how upsetting it would be, so why people think they can do it with slimmer models I have no idea.

Next time do the bald eagle behind a veil with a water drop into three wine glasses, no thinking outside the box on DPC.

Also great DOF usage, same as your WK39 protrait, love it!

"As for those commenting on her apperance, shame on you... I really hate it when people do that, judge me and my photography all you want, I do not care, but why are you knocking on her appearance?"

Really, is someone saying that she does not appear beautiful.
She is very beautiful woman. Perfect body. 99% of women would kill to look this fit.

Great image, ribbon deserved. I think we all interpret photos individually, base our opinions off what we see, etc.. I do see the ribs, I don't like the uber skinny look, however, it works great here for me. She seems waifish, like she washed up on the shore.. it only _adds_ to "my" story of the photo. Kudos to the model!

After reading the description of the outside temperature and the wind, I think that the model deserves the Blue ribbon.
Just my humble opinion.

I'm sure she's beautiful and none of the comments were directed at her, but for the photographer for making her appear this way. There does seem to be a trend to the comments... so perhaps notice should be taken of that for making models appear at their best? I don't think that many folks brave enough to say something about it are all on the wrong track.

Your model should take comfort in the fact that most voters/commenters will put the blame or credit on how the model looks on the photographer who lit her and posed her to appear a certain way.

Many congrats to you again, on your ribbon and for your wonderful talent as a photographer.

Haunting image. I'm guessing this is LalliSig' entry but it only meets 3 of the 4 criteria so I could be wrong.

Shallow DOF - check!
Dark vibe - check!
Very Sharp - check!
Body paint or dirt - no

Although I expect this to do well in the challenge I can't help but give this my red ribbon.

You should have fed her and she might have lived...lol. I like the tones here. The pose is a bit odd for the location. She looks dead as opposed to posing. The fram helps contain the different textures. DOF and focus are spot on!

I'm one of those who hates foreground bokeh, but I won't take off for that. Great tones. It has an odd uphill feel. Maybe that was your intent. Man, that poor girl needs to eat. Her ribs are jutting out. LOL
09/25/2009 09:35:39 AM
I will be honest here, she kinda looks dead. IF the eyes where looking at the camera that may have helped, the post processing is dark which adds to the shot. your horizon is tilted as well and you have strange lines all over the sky areas. A little colour would have made this seem a little less morbid. Excellent focus on the body though
