Downtown Dallas reflected in a piano on an upper floor of the Sheraton Hotel.

Looks like I forgot to enter my pre-challenge notes, so here they are: This one did very well when I posted it on Flickr, and is still receiving faves and comments over there. Past experience has shown me that a successful shot on Flickr does not always translate to a high score on DPC. I think the difference is that on Flickr you tend to only hear from the people it appeals to. On DPC you also hear from the ones that don't like it, usually in the form of low votes.

I entered this anticipating a high 5, but after 81 votes it is holding in the low 6's and is my most successful freestudy entry to date. Some great comments as well.

Post-challenge notes:
My strongest freestudy ever, made my profile page, and I now own 2/3 of the Powershot S5 page. (For now, anyway). I'm happy.

Liked it on flickr, and liked it here. It was one of my higher ratings in this challenge. I really like the angles, both in foreground and background. I like the symmetry of finding a curve in the foreground and in the background, and again, the alternating black and white keys of the piano repeated in the floors of the background buildings. There is so much to explore in this composition.

I absolutely loved the angle and the reflections of the city in your photo composition. The B&W is an excellent choice for color would have taken focus away from the reflections of the city and the piano. B & W tones are very dynamic. First sight of this photo and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue starts playing in my head - the big city and the piano just invoke that musical piece. My only nit - damn she has to get critical now:-) - is that I wish you shot this slightly lower such that the bar that cuts the window fell right under the sweeping edge of the piano. The reason is that it gives nice clean lines for the eye to follow without a broken pattern. The eye would follow the line of keys to the vanishing point. Then it follows the curve of the piano at that end to sweep off and connect nicely to the straight line of the window pane.

Well seen -- almost abstract in its presentation.

In the words of my wife sitting next to me "that's pretty cool" and "interesting". A great image and excellent use of the reflection. Contrast is great, and composition is good, but perhaps suffers a little from being a little too centered perhaps.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: I think this would've done really well in the Deep DOF challenge, but it still works here. The way you've used the piano to mirror the cityscape works really well and the contrast in this monotone image is a perfect match for you subject and composition. The overall effect is very effective. Of course the winning element is the juxtaposition of the piano with the city. I did well with this image: . I think yours offers a similar effect, though yours is a much higher quality image.

Critical stuff: I wonder whether it might have been possible to boost the shadow detail in the reflected building furthest left in the image.

Overall: A really effective image that deserves to do well. I'll be looking to see what lens you used.

Hellaciously cool perspective! Way to take excellent advantage of a great find. Exposure, comp, conversion - all very good. Really nifty shot.

Makes me wonder if there is a jazz pianist taking a break off to the side. I like the mix of the keys and the squares of the building. This has a different and unexpected feel to it. 7
