The Photo :I was inspired to title this Tides of Dusk since its basically taken from the same spot of the shot I took for the my last Free Study challenge I had entered. Except of course, this is the opposite side of the beach at Sunset. Rarely go handheld, had to here for the proper vantage point to omit the sidewalk and street, focused on the plant, used fill flash for foreground, can't tell since it's an HDR.

Post Process: Made of 3 Tone-mapped Jpegs derived from original RAW file. Did some color balancing to change blues to magneta, some Levels and more than a few rounds of sharpening which increased noise. I was forced to use neat image to remove it sacrificing some resolution I think. This won't score past 5.5.

Post Challenge- Well whatta ya know? It broke the 6.5 barrier!

Hi from the Critique Club

You asked for a comment from a Critique Club member.

I was reading yoru comments and then the comments during voting and a lot of people picked up on the fact that you used a fill flash for the plant. I actually like this, I think it gives the eye a starting point in the shot which leads to your very strong leading lines that you have going on.

Your details are good, would have liked to have seen a little more detail in teh rocks though. I think for me the light on the water is off. There seems to be no reason as to why it is there and surely your flash is not that good?? Post processing is very good, POV and DOF are excellent.

Overall, very nice placement

A good subject for HDR, but uneven light throughout.

Nice perspective and colours, but there is too much border competing with the image, and stealing the attetion.

Nice composition and good colors on the sky. Looks like you have tried to use flash for lighting the foreground. Clever attempt to get the HDR effect.

I shall be rating this challenge by the following criteria:

1 - Not HDR in my opinion

3 - HDR is way over-done, in my opinion

5 - A reasonable use of HDR, but not a very engaging photo, in my opinion

7 - A reasonable use of HDR, and an engaging photo, in my opinion

10 - A fantastic use of HDR, and an out of this world photo, in my opinion

Your photo receives:

5 - but barely. You could have toned down a lot of the spot processing here. (or what looks to be spot processing)

Very interesting choice of composition. Sky looks good. I would have scored it higher without the flash. 6

Nice colors. It looks like you used a flash for the foreground and it makes the middle look too dark.
