This is my first attempt at a proper portrait image; I know there are many wonderful portrait photographers offering their images here on DPC so I really tried to make something that might not be embarrassed by their work.

Nic is lying on the floor, hair spread out, with the camera on a high tripod above her (I had to work with the camera tethered to a laptop to to see what I was doing). I'm afraid there is an umbrella to her right and a soft box to her left - would someone pass benjikan a valium the size of a hockey puck please (see this thread). Truly, I do admit it, I have no clue about lighting - it is only the third time I've ever used it.

Post processing - mainly Nik Software's Complete Suite, both in PS CS4 and in Aperture 2; with final sharpening and colour correction done with Apple's Preview.

My worry is that in an effort to keep the focus squarely on the eyes I have over-softened the rest. No doubt folks will let me know!

Yes, I have just seen it...Nice image! Well done. Beautiful lighting and Post Production.

We seem to have a similar vision. This was shot for Spring Magazine from their last issue, came out back in the Spring of this year and shot in studio in Paris. It seems that flowers are really happening ;-)

Chalk and cheese here - benjikan- your work is in a different league altogether. Fabulous stuff. I'm just a guy with a camera and some software!

I had actually already shot this image by the time I noticed your 'umbrella' post and it certainly made me think (and it made me laugh - I appreciated the engaging, journalistic intent); I did feel the need to acknowledge my lighting choices in my description of the image and I meant what I said about having no clue about lighting - I think I even used the umbrella backwards and since Nic was lying on the kitchen floor and I had to work around the kitchen table I managed to cast a shadow from the leg of the tripod across her face! Thank goodness for Viveza - I was able to recover the shadow area with some careful control point guided trickery! I should have re-shot but I had already stretched my wife's tolerance after having her lie for about 40 minutes on a rock hard surface. Proof that I am a very amateur photographer in every sense of the word.

Thanks for the comment - it is appreciated.

Nice photo and lighting. Feel free to ignore Benjamin Kanarek. He even admits that his photography career began after he fell five meters (probably onto his head.) Maybe he should do it again and see if he develops some manners.

A wonderful photograph of a very beautiful model. I lovethe way that despite the heavily stylised pose the overall effect of the photo is of wholesome naturalness. Really, very good indeed.

Critique Club Critique

First Impressions
Pretty. Tones are lovely and work well. Flowers are getting lost.

Photograph Information, Technicals & Composition Review
Just read your Photographer's Comments - for me, there is no over-softness, I think it works well. I at first wished there wasn't so much darkness (flowers aside for a moment), especially at the bottom of the frame - but it is growing on me the more I look at the image. Save for perhaps the bottom left, and only because it is not even with the right and for a centered image such as this my eyes want that visual balance. I think with those darker areas 'brighter' - either by pp or with the lighting 'in situ', would also be good, just 'another image'.

As I inspect the darker areas closer, I can discern some very slight 'issues' on the left in some of the darker areas. There is something that appears to be lace or fabric of some description just above her left shoulder, but that could be intentional.

I like the way her hands are posed and the expression on her face. The nose is maybe a fraction too soft, but it still works in my opinion. I like your composition.

I am sorry I cannot offer technical lighting critique. I would recommend seeking opinions from the knowledgeable ones at DPC in this area - and there are many, if you would like a little more insight into the technical lighting aspects of your image.

Comments, Score & Placement Review
3 out of 159 and a score of 7.13 - excellent of course. Sounds like you would/should be proud of yourself by not making something that is embarrassed by the work of other portrait photographers at DPC.

Several of your in-Challenge comments offer some good portrait observations, of course the resulting variations would change the image quite a bit, so as long as the final image is pleasing to your artistic vision - that's the main thing. Certainly some good pointers for future use though.

Summary
A stand out portrait that jumps up at you to look at. I do wish for the flowers to be seen more, both lighting wise and texture (that is if they are real - and looks like they are).

This is a stunning shot, congrats on a well deserved ribbon. You've made excellent use of that umbrella, if this is not knowing what to do with lighting, I'd absolutely love to see what you do when you get a clue :):)

The concept for the flowers and spread out hair make this a standout. The rest of the shot is very enjoyable to see, and not overdone. Nice job, and congrats on the ribbon too.

The only thing that bothers me with this is that her skin is too smooth. Her fingers and nose are too soft which make her eyes look too sharp. Also her lips are processed unevenly? There is some texture in the top and none on the bottom. If you tone down the softness and make it more balanced I would give it a higher score. The concept, lighting and model are all very good.

I really like this. Love the square crop. Great composition, very nice lighting. Nice catch lights. The pose really draws me in to the image. Only very minor nitpick, a few hotspots on lips. Really nice photo, great job.
