The Image: Went back for a quiet walk through the Victorian Bushfires area where 180 people lost their lives on Black Saturday, February 7, 2009. Fires moved through this area where I am standing at between 100 and 300km per hour. This is where most people died...without a chance of escape as the fire raged up the hills.

I shot this at ISO 500 as I didn't want the camera to provide the noise as it would be slightly fake. I used software to do what needed to be done.

It is now a very quiet place. There are no birds or sounds of leaves, just silence. All you can hear is the vehicles in the distance. The black earth is now grey. There are creepers growing on the gum trees and the ferns are starting to come back in the form of little shoots, but for the most part, it's a desolate black place.

I got the new fisheye out for this shot and like the way the branches converge into the sky.

The Edit: USM, Levels, SilverFX Pro for the Image grain where I chose a High ISO film to suit. The grain is subtle at this size, but it's there. I added a tint and did some dodging and burning and selective sharpening.

The Prediction: I reckon a 6 even...let's see how we go

Post: a nice result, over my prediction

You know what I also love about this? From the thumbnail it looks like an old cracked tree stump, which fits the image perfectly.

like burnt and distorted fingers .. which brings to mind the horror ..
its a great image enzo .. i imagine those ppl have touched the sky and gone beyond ..
i was going to enter something very similar but without the grain and not burnt in the 'from the ground up' challenge but thought it wouldnt make a 6 .. was going to call it 'and touch the sky' .. i think its part of a line from a poem, but for the life of me i cant remember wot it is .. :)
