What a great day I had today, went up north with Mark & my wife. We went just for the steam trains, 3 hours drive one way but I think it was worth it, this looks killer in print.

est score 6.4
dream score - a 7 will be bless.

post challenge:

A lot of you wanted to know about the strange crop.. well unfortunately some inconsiderate companies built a huge shopping mall just to the right of my shot and I thought that the golden arched 'M' of MacDonalds would spoil the 'old time' look of the shot. I had other options but I liked this one too much so I lived with the crop, I am very pleased to see it ribbon, Thank you very much.

Congratulations on getting a ribbon for this lovely shot. Just the colors/colours of the engine and carriages take me back to the train rides of my youth growing up in the West of England. If you had been able to include primroses in flower along the rail embankment, now that would have made the memory complete!

The crop doesn't look strange to me at all. I have always been a fan of square crops. The pictures look so much bigger and larger than life when they are square. This is amazing. I'm so glad you had a great day, and a ribbon to put the icing on the cake -- or I should say the memory :) Congratulations MAK! You continue to be AWESOME! :)

Fantastic Job!!! Great photograph! To me, it seems to be a photograph that you can just gaze upon for sometime and still find more reasons why this photograph is so great. =)

I'm so glad there's a reason for the odd crop, Marac. It's lovely... still I wish for more. CONGRATS on your ribbon. It's a lovely shot.

Nice shot. Very good PP for the "Basic Editing". It looks like a HDR image.

Why do you call it 'railroad' instead of 'railway'? Indeed, if it were really GWR, wouldn't it have a 7' wheelspan? Come to think of it, maybe the chassis is sort of overhanging the wheels by 1'2" either side...

Can somebody hold this anorak for a minute?

Lovely picture, congrats on the ribbon.

Wow, I'm surprised that #2 and #3 winners in this contest both have really obvious halos in the images. I would have thought that is one of the biggest no nos in crafting a photo. It certainly is on a professional level. This contest really helped give me a better understanding of the cross section of people on this site.
But congrats on the ribbon, it's still a great photograph in many other ways.

I would love to know your processing here. Do you mind explaining it here? If not could you PM me the details of how to achieve this look under basic editing? I would appreciate it very much.

Fill light, highlights & shadows and curves with noise ninja will all work to get this result.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure we rode on this in 1970 (we rode on lots of old steamtrains in England and Wales in 1970...).
Congratulations on making the front page again, Marac.

I like it. My major nitpick, however, is how close to the right edge of the frame the engine is cropped. Cut off a little in fact. I suspect there may be something distracting off to that side.

An effective and well thought out image - lighting is well controlled, color and saturation are very effective and the overall impression is positive. However, it's not particularly unique and the unfortunate cut off of the engine on the right side of the image is a irritant and flaws an otherwise excellant entry.

Good old-timey feel to it. And the shot of red on the front is a real leader. Well done.

Good use of perspective - trains are perfect for that sort of thing - and you found a great train, too! I like the hint of a person in the window, and that black smoke against the sky. Very well composed.

Nicely done! I'm undecided about the trees to crop or not to crop. JMO! overall it's a nice shot.
