Challenge: Abstract Motion (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-50D
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: 3rd St. S.W. Calgary
Date: Mar 24, 2009
Aperture: 9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 30
Date Uploaded: Mar 24, 2009

Took a similar shot weeks earlier, and this was the only idea I could come up with for this challenge. Only thing different was that some of the office lights were on, which made this shot more interesting in my opinion.

I just hope that this isn't too much of a cliche' for motion shots.

Edited for contrast and brightness.

I like this a lot. The colors and composition are interesting, as is the use of reflection. The static grid is good contrast with the wavy panes.

PostLuminous Award Nominee!
Beautiful and Luminous!! I mistook this for PennyStreet's (a huge compliment, that...)

Thanks everyone for their comments. I do appreciate them all. I am very pleased with this result. I think it did quite well considering it was my second entry (my first one bombed), and all the confusion about what abstract is. Some people think it is abstract while others do not.

Here is how I came of this photo. I was actually on the top level of a parking garage shooting some cranes adjacent (I really like cranes for some reason right now). I then noticed this building across the street and how with my angle the reflection led to the street below. Thought the warping windows and a long exposure would produce some neat results, and sure enough it did. All the windows with a mirror like reflection had their office lights turned off. The office in the image didn't, so I chose to focus mainly on that as I knew it would show in the exposure.

Nice reflection but hardly abstract...

Very enjoyable layers of abstraction, distortion, and reversals.

This is one of the images I was torn over - it's extremely clever, an excellant use of color, shutter speeds and the use of the window for different effects. On the other hand, I just don't like it for reasons I can't effectively articulate. So I rated it an 8 - I suspect others would probably rate it a 10 and it is certainly worthy of that - just not to me.

The lights definitely show motion, just not sure the whole composition is abstract.

Good eye to catch this... I really like how the windows distort the image... and the light streaks give a nice sense of motion.

A little less abstract in the sense that you can tell what it is, but a very pleasing composition with lots too look at. 7

Nice effect through the glass. Looks a bit like a stained glass abstract.

Nice photo for deformation or something, but it's not an Abstract. Maybe blurring it beyond the recognizable would have done the trick.
