First, thanks for all the wonderful comments and faves! This challenge has been awesome.

I like the "slice of life" this image represents. The processing comments were right on. I agree that it is muddy on the trailer, I overused shadow/highlight on the body and contrast could have been better.

I rushed process this just before the deadline and really saw these weaknesses even in the thumbnail after rollover. But you can't do much at that point. I'd like to think if I hadn't of rushed, my processing would have been more meticulous and I would have had ended up with a better final image. Maybe I'll give it another shot when my overall skills improve.

This is Mario, a ranch hand where I use to keep my horse. Taken mid-day at lunch time.

The trailer in the background makes me feel like you have not only captured your subject, but in just one pic you've told us more about his life and his world then would be possible in many many words.

I have come back to this, and I am bumping it up two notches, to a 9. Let me explain why:

First and foremost, a second perusal showed me that the guy was actually in the act of passing THROUGH the bight in the lariat, and that just blew me away; now the quivering liveliness of the lariat itself, against everything else being frozen, takes on special meaning.

Now, beyond that, there's such a perfect slice-of-life going on here that I can't help but6 be drawn into it. Some might have been tempted to crop out the trailer, but *I'm* glad you didn't, because it connects me to this itinerant lifestyle of the American Southwest.

I do have a quibble, that in your search for shadow detail you have brought the shadows up a little too far, probably with shadow/highlight. By the same token, you've brought the bright part of the trailer down too far, so it looks muddy. I think I'd have rather seen it practically glowing, but I can't be sure without an original to look at.

I'd love to see the original on this, if you were interested in my take on the processing. Meanwhile, welcome to the 9's :-)

What an absolute riot!! This is great and the sepia gives in that nice western feel. Good luck!

Excellent action photo. I find the background a little too sharp as my eye tends to get distracted from the person which should be the subject.

Very interesting action capture. I like that the face is crisp and frozen in time, but I think freezing the rope and feet would add a great deal of interest and appeal to the image. Nice work with the sepia toning, too.

What a great story. Just enough blur to show motion, but spot on detail and clarity. Tone really adds a rural feel.

You know what? I love this because of the inclusion of the trailer, because of the shirt hanging on the door, because there is stuff around, and because it is everyday life for someone, captured well and at the perfect moment. the toning works well, the depth of field is great. 9

Good catch on this action shot. The horse trailer sets the scene, but you have enough cowboy stuff besides I would rather see it cropped out and make it portrait mode.

03/12/2009 04:01:28 PM
very awesome. Everything about it. Composition is cohesive and stable with the man/shadow/trailer forming that visual triangle. The addition of movement in the feet but crispness in the rest of the body means you got the perfect shutter speed, adds another element to the shot. To top it off, you captured something cool happening. Shot could be in a magazine (would love to check it out in color), giving it a 9 hope it does well
