lol...most parents would be mad. Only a photographer would see this as an opportunity. :) Great shot. Congrats on the top 100 finish too

This reminds me of my childhood just by looking at this photo. I was that boy every day. I came home looking like this on so many occasions that I can't count them all. The look on his face also resembles mine when I looked at my mother with no accepted explanation for why I looked this way :) This is also a very nicely executed black and white. I love the warmth of the tone you chose rather than just a simple cold black and white. That warmth works nicely with the theme of playing outdoors in the heat of the summer where this look could have originated on any given day :) Great photo...

This image gets my vote for best portrait of the challenge. So much character captured here... it's a great photo.

The eyes are amazing, sharp as all get, and so real they're even a tiny bit huanting. Wonderful portrait!

Great portrait, has personality and the eyes really pop.
03/17/2009 10:30:26 AM
Yep they sure will be. Mud in your eye. Nice portrait. You didn't get any mud on your lens fortunately.
03/16/2009 08:59:45 PM
Such an exceptional portrait, your processing is perfect. Touchdown photo, times two.

Great portrait - amazing detail and sharpness in the eyes.
03/15/2009 10:03:51 PM
This one has haunted me... The eyes are so intense and the clarity is so surreal. Excellent use of composition and tonal range. This works so well on so many levels...
03/15/2009 09:51:47 PM
He doesn't look very happy. I hope he had fun!! Love his eyes!!
03/15/2009 09:46:49 PM
"I don't wanna hold still I wanna go back to play in the mud!"

Beautiful image, conversion, tonality, eyes. Good eye to capture this before turning the garden hose on him :-) 9

I'm going to get Timmy. He threw mud at me! (Or, Mommy! He hit me back first!) Great kid, lighting, and expression.
03/15/2009 08:52:56 PM
He has beautiful eyes - I noticed those before I noticed all of the mud.
03/15/2009 07:18:45 PM
Love it. One of my favorites. B/W was a great choice. Eye contact is mesmerizing.
03/15/2009 06:37:51 PM
I like the shot, and most of the time I like serious faces better than smiles. But I would have loved to see an impish smile on this one.
03/15/2009 01:32:25 PM
This is one of those photos that belongs in the scrapbook! Looks like he had a lot of fun!
03/15/2009 01:16:05 PM

03/15/2009 12:29:28 PM
good use of toning
03/15/2009 12:28:32 PM
The mud is not convincingly spread. It looks as if posed
03/15/2009 10:28:10 AM
Very nice image. It's good to see a few "great" images. This is a perfect reflection of your abilities as a photographer.
03/15/2009 10:08:52 AM

Wonderful photo, his expression is perfect for the situation. Your eye PP is very good and the tighter crop works really well too. Best of luck.

good portrait - nice sharp and clear eyes - well done
03/14/2009 05:33:06 PM
beautiful portrait of a kid with beautiful eyes. expression seems to contradict mud/appearance - i'm unsure of what is being conveyed because of it. toning and conversion excellent.

He had come running in to the house that afternoon, laughing and partly exhausted from his play. From head to foot was he covered, in the mud from the pit that they had made. From a garden hose and a sand-box came hours of fun for the young, and oh it had been a glorious time.

That time had to come to an end, however, as he was called for dinner. So he said his goodbyes to his playmates, and had run off into the house, expecting the admonishment he'd probably get for being so dirty and not really caring. He would bear it proudly, and was looking forward to the warm shower that would be a certainty.

So it was that he came into the house, and braced himself for the lecture, but that lecture never came. For he had forgotten an important thing about living in the family that was his, he had forgotten that his mother loved her camera.

With a cry of delight, his mother spied him standing there, so covered, and told him to stay right there. Do not move! I'll just be a moment! And she ran and got the camera, and came back to him, and told him to smile, and started snapping photos while the mud dried and stuck to him and started to itch.

He sighed and impatiently stood there and let her shoot, and suddenly wished even more for the lecture instead, as the mud was beginning to get uncomfortable, and he was dying for that shower, and wouldn't she ever stop!?

She did, and sent him off to the shower, and giggled to herself, and another day in the life of a photographic parent took another step towards its end.

And the boy? He swore he'd never take a photograph of HIS kids! But we all know how such promises end, don't we?

Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. Heh, yup that is an apt title. When I look upon your composition, I think of a saying I heard years ago, "The definition of a boy: A noise with dirt on it" The eyes are very startling they reach out and grab you as he levels a stare at us. The dirt well, I think he was having a lot of fun until 'we' interupted his play and called him away. That is what I gather from his look. He was happy but is not now. He wants to go back and play. Mood and emotion are great. Love the color tones and the sharp details. You did such a wonderful job on this portrait of the young boy! Great work - 8.
03/14/2009 12:43:43 PM
Very well done. Love the look in his eyes and the processing to make them shine
03/14/2009 05:43:53 AM

how true, how true great humanistic touch
03/12/2009 01:19:47 PM
Definitely a keeper. He looks so solemn though, and the mud looks so "fun." An interesting dichotomy that has been established.

03/11/2009 11:55:03 AM
great portrait, great expression.
03/11/2009 11:23:16 AM
why does he look so unhappy?
03/11/2009 08:50:43 AM
Perfect title, like the sepia tones here, now did he come in this way or did we mud him up for the shot? Either way, great lighting, catch lights and exposure. 9
03/11/2009 08:35:51 AM
Awesome eyes!
03/11/2009 06:48:35 AM
his expression is a bit sad - did you cover him with mud? Other than that, good focus and toning works well.
03/11/2009 03:51:12 AM
Grub. I mean that in the nicest possible way. Well done!
03/11/2009 01:03:02 AM
