i could have written a book about this. Easily one of the most complex images in the challenge.
03/18/2009 02:27:54 PM
I like this shot, but for some reason it makes me sad.
03/18/2009 02:03:14 PM
One of the finest in the challenge - excellent photograph.
03/18/2009 10:34:01 AM
Magnificent moment captured for eternity. Indeed a gem.

Very well composed, I assume this is a candid shot but you really captured emotion on the mans face and it makes me want to hear his story. I really enjoy this kind of shot, thanks and good luck in the challenge.
03/17/2009 10:29:43 PM
Just excellent. Great mood and I love the film-like grain.

Reviewing my top picks... This is one of three tens I've given in this challenge. Just great!
03/17/2009 09:46:58 PM
Excellent composition. I like the tone and grainy effect. Good luck.
03/17/2009 07:09:00 PM
this was one of my favs, great composition and tones
03/17/2009 06:48:07 AM
I like this very unusual image. Not to keen on the graininess.
03/17/2009 04:10:38 AM
A wonderful candid moment.
03/17/2009 02:38:50 AM
Good shot. The grain works well with this pic.
03/17/2009 01:27:08 AM
Wonderful composition. The black and white is prefect for this piece.
03/16/2009 11:49:24 PM
It's as if he's been sitting there forever waiting for a sign to fall in his lap and is beginning to sense the hopelessness creep in, the weight of the years literally pulling him down, heavy...almost cumbersome, and thinks to himself..."surely this is not all there is."
03/16/2009 11:13:34 PM
My, doesn't he look happy!? Interesting perspective. Hope a few more showed up before the wedding (or so I'm guessing from the pew bows).
03/16/2009 10:46:59 PM
Interesting narrative. The promise of life-long bliss in the air... and a grumpy old man. This is truly a memorable photograph. - bumping
03/16/2009 06:18:55 PM
wonderful storytelling...
03/16/2009 04:21:31 PM
talk about a somber picture...very grainy and dark
03/16/2009 11:35:52 AM
I love the photo; the sparse church and two persons. I would have preferred some other title, as there is so much happening in this picture! 8.
03/16/2009 07:05:35 AM
Love the tone and the composition. Good luck.
03/15/2009 07:46:51 PM
There's a story here and I'd love to know it! Wonderfully expressive shot.
03/15/2009 06:32:24 PM
Glad you had a willing subject. I think you wanted the DOF and grain.
03/15/2009 05:13:18 PM
This is great. Nice processing.
03/15/2009 04:54:11 PM
This is so full of character and story...it's brilliant. Wonderful mood and tonality to this black and white conversion.
03/15/2009 02:36:39 PM
7 this is sooo touching...

one of the best

;D brano
03/15/2009 01:22:58 PM
I can't help but wonder what the man in front is thinking. The bows on the pews give the church a festive look, yet he seems so unhappy.
03/15/2009 12:17:45 PM
Looks like they are too early for the wedding. Visually humorous or else I misunderstand the context. I don't get the title but a 6 anyway.
03/15/2009 11:54:45 AM
The mood is the thing here. Faith? Doubt? Leaves the viewer wondering, which is what IMO makes for a great photo.
03/15/2009 11:31:49 AM
very strong image..... 7
03/15/2009 10:30:14 AM
One of the most emotive shots I have seen in this challenge. This is lovely. I love everything about it. 10.
03/15/2009 05:31:51 AM
Strong, evocative study of someone who looks like their faith won't be shaken easily. Rich, grainy film-like treatment is appropriate here.
03/15/2009 02:57:54 AM
Nice portrait in this almost empty church.
03/14/2009 11:52:30 PM
This just smacked me in the face, one of my favs of the challenge!
03/14/2009 09:57:52 PM
Such a masterful shot. Soon as it came up - it just hit me. The placement and composition of you subjects is perfect IMO. Love the depth you created here. Truly an amazing shot.
03/14/2009 09:47:05 PM
nice post processing
03/14/2009 08:25:49 PM
Great composition. Normally noise is distracting but in this photo it's a great effect! Nice!
03/14/2009 07:20:07 PM
Lots of contrasting elements and subtities here. The way in which this was captured, the two exits are very symbolic of the two people on the benches. The white old man is alone, isolated in the corner much like the bright exit. He wants to be alone and is. Perhaps his faith is being called into question. Meanwhile, the young woman, in the shadows is also alone but doesn't want to be. She sits close to the aisle in the hopes of human contact perhaps. Her faith seems stronger as a result.

Although this appears to have been shot at the time of a wedding, it plays more like a funeral due to your rendering and composition. Perhaps this is all just an exercise of introspection and the elements you've found tethered together in meaning are more representive of your own feelings of faith, of people, of the moments inbetween. Whatever the purpose this is a thought provoking image. Thank you for entering it.
03/14/2009 06:38:46 PM
Great capture and wonderful mood captured. Strong and powerful composition that deserves to be among the best. I give you 10!
03/14/2009 05:57:27 PM
There is a lot of emotion in this picture. The tones really enhance that, and the horizontal lines of the pews increase the sense of isolation. Bumped
03/14/2009 05:28:47 PM
A very good composition.
03/14/2009 05:15:39 PM
Good capture and well lit.
03/14/2009 04:13:57 PM
Keeping the cross in the shot was a great choice. I think this really captures the feeling of reflection.
03/14/2009 12:59:14 PM
nice post processing here. 6
03/14/2009 09:20:30 AM
Interesting story told here - great. 8.
03/14/2009 08:54:27 AM
Very strong photograph for me.
03/14/2009 06:35:56 AM
This is a really great photo and I one I expect won't do quite as well at it deserves. Have you considered posting this to 1x; I think it fits with their aesthetic really well.
03/14/2009 05:12:14 AM
to me he doesn't look faithful at all
03/14/2009 03:57:23 AM
Powerful, sympathetic - a photo of real value that will have lasting impact.
03/13/2009 11:38:22 PM
I like this, I was immediately drawn to the man and then my eye went looking around. Perhaps not intended, but the bows lead me out of the church, and by his expression, maybe that's what he's thinking too.
03/13/2009 11:26:05 PM
I had a tough time narrowing down the field for this challenge. This was the only picture that I knew was a ribbon right away. So I'm giving you my blue.

The Posthumous Blue Ribbon:
03/13/2009 09:53:29 PM
better than it looks at first. I see messages of endurance and very personal perseverence.

I also see the theme of faith in terms of 'faith dying'. Empty pews and he's not got long left for this world.

Exce11ent and I'd 10ve to give this a higher score.
03/13/2009 09:18:20 PM
He doesn't seem very happy in his faith. That's part of what makes this an interesting photo ... with a story to unravel.
03/13/2009 09:02:55 PM
Oh... what a wonderful, emotive image!

The lighting on the man isn't great, and there's lots of noise... but somehow I'm lovin' this one! The expression and the obvious wedding situation (bows on pews)... it's a wonderful dichotomy.

This is a very strong image - really moved by it.
03/13/2009 03:13:17 PM
Moody I wish it was in B/W not shepia it is a good shot
03/13/2009 03:06:48 PM
What a beautifully somber photo, very, very nice.
03/13/2009 02:02:11 PM
This is a little grainy, but I think it adds to the tone of the photo. Nice job.
03/13/2009 01:06:16 PM
He looks like he's ready to doze off. Good character study!
03/13/2009 09:32:08 AM
Interesting image.. love the old guy and the grain works well here.
03/13/2009 08:25:58 AM
A little grainy for me but I do like the story. The placement of the man rocks!
03/13/2009 06:30:48 AM
One of the best in the challenge. I'm a tiny bit ambivalent about the processing but there's no arguing about the underlying image; it's excellent. Faith is indeed a lonely business, i think. And essentially a private one, as well ... no preacher required. 9.
03/13/2009 04:05:34 AM
I like the isolation of the guy, deep in his thoughts
03/13/2009 02:48:47 AM
It's those wooden benches. They need to get rid of those and get some cushy chairs. And good music would help as well. ;-)
03/13/2009 02:39:24 AM
I'm normally put off a little by religious themed photos but this has a lot more than "a guy in a church", well done
03/12/2009 10:17:09 PM
Great composition!
03/12/2009 09:53:41 PM
speaks volumes
03/12/2009 08:13:01 PM
very strong image
03/12/2009 06:14:14 PM
This makes my heart ache.
03/12/2009 06:13:20 PM
love this... the look on his face is priceless
03/12/2009 05:05:49 PM
I love this mood. Great composition!
03/12/2009 03:08:24 PM
Love it. The different contrasting elements really guide your eye throughout the picture, but always return to the man and his captivating face that draws the viewer into the picture, into the scene, and into his life.
03/12/2009 02:23:07 PM
I really like the story you are telling with this image. Well done. 8
03/12/2009 02:07:33 PM
wonderful image. love the processing
03/12/2009 02:02:01 PM
Looks like he is caught in a moment of thought.
03/12/2009 12:40:03 PM
Composition is just slightly off balance, which is a bit distracting to me. I like the post processing on this.
03/12/2009 06:51:17 AM
Beautiful.
03/12/2009 05:52:31 AM
Lil grainy. Wish it was full!!
03/11/2009 07:54:48 PM
I like the contrasting themes in this shot. He looks like he is deep in thought... but then the bows suggest it is a wedding. Then there is the contrast between the old man, and the young woman a few rows back. Very though provoking.
03/11/2009 04:53:02 PM
the bows on the pews are distracting, great expresion
03/11/2009 04:39:53 PM
Fantastic image. I am enjoying just gazing around this one.
03/11/2009 03:22:25 PM
the white bows on the ends of the pews suggest a wedding - I hope he hasn't been stood up by the bride!
great image
03/11/2009 02:36:11 PM
Love it 8
03/11/2009 01:25:12 PM
So much attitude. I love it.
03/11/2009 01:16:47 PM
He looks like he is paying for the wedding.
03/11/2009 12:47:06 PM
I read a little of the demise of faith in the western world with this shot. There may be hope, with a younger lady having entered, but maybe not fully.

Well done, the look on his face adds to the image. Thanks for sharing.
03/11/2009 11:40:02 AM
very nice PP -9
03/11/2009 10:14:56 AM
What an expression, not sure if it's a wedding or a funeral....
03/11/2009 07:09:01 AM
excellent shot
03/11/2009 05:27:50 AM
Wonderful. 10
03/11/2009 04:35:26 AM
The church looks as if it is decorated for a wedding, is this the father of the bride contemplating the cost.
Great expression, added to by the nearly empty pews.
03/11/2009 03:26:40 AM
Powerful emotions in this one.
03/11/2009 01:38:19 AM
This looks like an old time shot, sepia, blurred and faded. Was that the intent? The old guy is really in his own world concentrating on something. Maybe thinking of his long gone family members? Nice positioning related to the woman in back.
03/11/2009 12:55:15 AM
wow, so much to love about this
