Challenge: Hidden Gem -- 1,000th Challenge! (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II
Location: Skullerud
Date: Mar 4, 2009
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/60
Date Uploaded: Mar 5, 2009

This is, in fact, a photo taken the day after the challenge was announced. It's a mistake and an accident. The camera settings are manual and there's an onboard flash set to go. I probably left my finger on the button or accidentally fired off a shot at the ground in front of my feet. The snow is in fact deliberately blown out in order to get some sort of decent exposure on the skiers - hence the flash, also. By moving the slider to max reduction of exposure in RAW editing and broddling about with curves and contrast etc, this is what shows:

the two shots either side of this one are these:

This has to be the best "BROWN" ever - 1109th out of 1108!

sorry I missed this masterpiece long ago in March 2009, with such a large field and this stand alone wonder, nicely done by one of DPCs true brown ribbon grandmasters!

dude you are a god! last in the all time challenge of all time!

I think this is a bit of a cheat. Some of your other brown ribbons have had better wit and displayed a more subtle response to the challenge than this, and yet you carry off the hardest of all browns with pure technique? tisk tisk tisk.

03/27/2009 02:17:13 PM
Flawless, indeed - I actually gave this a 4 for the fact that I liked the concept.

Well, I said I couldn't wait to see which was yours! LOL! You got more 10's than I did!

Wow you got more tens then I did and still got a brown you are so lucky :)

Holy cow. That has to be the greatest number of 1 votes ever. Congrats on that achievement and on getting the brown without trying!

03/18/2009 10:50:38 AM
Haha! Nice. You got 14 more 10's then got on my entry. Gotta love DPC. :)

Congrats with most diffucult brown ribbon of all time here on DPC. In spite of fierce compedition and loads of shamefull 10s you managed to pull it off.

It's a binary thing, so I believe the correct grade for this photo is: 1 (since 0 is not an option). White is on (1); black is off (0). Pity you did not achieve the 1. Voter's lack of understanding IMO.

Hey Peter you were totally robbed my friend. I loved your sheer cheek with this one.
I thought afterwards that it would have been especially funny if you had incorporated a small rectangle with a red cross in it in the top left hand corner of the image as if the image had failed to load, you could have called it Refresh lol.

You are a testament to the craziness of DPC that I love.

I had originally scored this 6. In retrospect, it deserves to be higher, as an absolutely pluperfect example of its genre, which, while not taken seriously by *most* DPCers, nevertheless is a valid creative expression :-) Besides which, the image absolutely IS flawless. 10 it is...

03/17/2009 11:49:29 PM
Looks over exposed;-)

Absolutely.

Sure!

:-), I don't know what is idea here!

I have never given a 1 at DPC; but then you may be gunning for the
brown. So I don't know how are you to be helped.

I would give 5 for creativity on the title.
But a 1 on the total overexposure! Avg = 5+1/2 = 3....Sorry, if it too high!

03/17/2009 12:56:26 AM
That bright area over on the left side is distracting and pulls the viewers eye away from the subject. It also seems blurred and unclear. I think most of it is due to the use of excessive JPEG compression. Your file size of only 4.3k indicates a highly compressed image and that is what is robbing most of the detail and sharpness from this image. Check your compression settings when you save your file. Always adjust JPEG compression so that your file size is as large as possible, but within the challenge limit. (200k for this one)

Well, can't complain about composition, or the execution. I can offer that the subject isn't very interesting, unless you happen to have a fetish for blizzards or snowstorms.

Hmmmm... uh... ahhh... huh. Ohhh kaayyy. Yup - hard as I try, I can't find anything to criticize here.

Could possibly do with a little more white in it, apart from that, not a bad composition

Great shot of a snowball in a blinding snowstorm. The detail in this shot is extraordinary. The processing is the best I've seen in this challenge. I was going to give you a 10 but there is a slight flaw in the upper right corner.

Why? Why enter a blank canvas as your best photo? Is it a joke? Are you trying to get last place? It's a waste of viewers' and voters' time, in my opinion.

Interpretation of Topic: Very Creative Thinking, but contrary to what most photographers would like to capture with their cameras.
Photography: Hard to tell...

I do think this photo has some merit, especially in conjunction with your title, but I know most people will not see it this way.

03/14/2009 10:12:55 AM
Oh well there would have to be one piece of "conceptual art". Thankfully only one since this is a "photography" contest. OK as a concept but not as a stand alone photo. 4 for the idea. 0 for photographic quality. Avg 2.

  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/14/2009 04:48:35 AM
I think it's slightly over exposed, maybe reduce the exposure by 1/3 of a stop
  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/14/2009 04:43:40 AM
And to think I refreshed this page several times thinking my connection was down!

It's a shame the polar bear and arctic fox are looking away, you could have improved it by making noise so they looked. The igloo is a nice touch, and balances out the image perfectly. A little more sharpening and perhaps a contrast boost, this would have been a winner.

  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/13/2009 04:21:05 PM
I think you could have boosted the contrast a little, also the composition is not following any of the suggestions I know of. Now to the good parts: focus is dead on and the colors are strong and vibrant :)
  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/13/2009 03:40:38 PM
Looks a little overexposed ;-)
  Photographer found comment helpful.
03/13/2009 02:58:27 PM
Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. Ah! A study in color and symbolism to push/test our perceptions of the world and how we see it right?! When we see white here in this composition we are really seeing Red at 255, Green at 255 and Blue at 255. How can we be seeing the three colors when stereotypically when numbers are high it is an indication of presence!? Yet all we see is white. Perhaps the lens was looking through a prism? Perhaps this is all we want to see in a photo - a flawless presentation absent of anything to mar the surface? Hidden behind it all is the base foundation - the canvas that is pure before anything else is added. But then when one thinks of it the color white symbolizes purity - things in their natural state. Pure, pristine, flawless.

I don't quite know what to say. There's not much to comment on here :-)

Oh, yeah. This has got charliebaker written all over it. As it's an obvious attempt for the brown, you'll get some high scorers attempting to foil your efforts. There are some pretty crappy shots in this challenge, so it will be interesting to see if you make it! I'm gonna give you a 2 since I actually think this is better than a couple of others.

Harris K. Telemacher: I like the relationships. I mean, each character has his own story. The puppy is a bit too much, but you have to over look things like that in these kinds of paintings. The way he's *holding* her... it's almost... filthy. I mean, he's about to kiss her and she's pulling away. The way the leg's sort of smashed up against her... Phew... Look how he's painted the blouse sort of translucent. You can just make out her breasts underneath and it's sort of touching him about here. It's really... pretty torrid, don't you think? Then of course you have the onlookers peeking at them from behind the doorway like they're all shocked. They wish. Yeah, I must admit, when I see a photo like this, I get emotionally... erect.
