Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: The Slave Market, Charleston, South Carolina
Date: Aug 12, 2006
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/30
Galleries: Urban, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Mar 4, 2009

I recently rediscovered this image and wonder why I ever overlooked it. I underexposed it in DPP and then converted to B&W. A little dodge and burn and out came this. I find it to be a strong image with a lot of contrasting themes. Light to dark, old to new, young women in a summer skirt walking in an overcast Rainy Day.

Good street scene capture!
03/17/2009 04:50:03 PM
Nice composition, I like the lack of color to allow us to see the details.

A precious b/w!

Love the composition and the story it tells... Great use of b&w.
03/17/2009 06:37:29 AM
The silhouetted figure makes this work well
03/17/2009 06:32:17 AM
Excellent b&W image. Nice composition, great processing.
03/16/2009 11:53:33 PM
Great combination of elements that work together to produce a great image.
03/16/2009 04:45:15 PM
I wish this was taken with a faster shutterspeed, but it's very good as it is now. The car turning in the right side of the image is good, indicates movement in the photograph, but at the same time I would like to see the woman totally freezed. Impossible to have both at the same time unless the car drives f'in fast.
03/16/2009 04:00:48 PM
I like the black and white conversion, and the silhouetted woman.
03/16/2009 07:02:11 AM
Nice lights reflection on wet sidewalk.
03/15/2009 08:01:08 PM

03/15/2009 05:04:56 PM
Great shot, very well composed with a nice perspective.
03/15/2009 11:56:37 AM
Just a little out of skew. otherwise a very good shot.
03/15/2009 11:45:30 AM
toning adds to the image, arch makes a nice frame for the elements
03/15/2009 10:20:47 AM
Very nice image. It's good to see a few "great" images. This is a perfect reflection of your abilities as a photographer.
03/15/2009 10:08:53 AM
A very nice street candid, well done.
03/15/2009 07:00:46 AM
I like the composition here. excellent post processing, 6

Nice view through the gate. Lovely reflection of the light on the wet ground.
03/15/2009 12:42:05 AM
The silhouette of the lady really makes this shot. Good natural framing.
03/14/2009 11:11:11 PM
good conversion to black and white, like the silohuette and the way this arch way frames the scene
03/14/2009 04:50:49 PM
love te lights reflecting on the wet footpath. The silhouette of the lady with the umbrella is wonderful. I feel almost like I am right behind her. Well done, this is a great image

What elegance! I admire this very much.
03/14/2009 12:26:21 AM
Aptly titled.
03/13/2009 11:14:17 PM
love the dark mood that really portrays that it was a rainy day
03/13/2009 10:10:28 PM
this is Charleston...where I will be in a couple of wks...really love the deep rich tone you have with your processing...enough light...enough dark...very engaging
03/13/2009 07:09:56 PM
nice crisp clean image, great B&W... looks like an ad for the SUV though- was that intended?
03/13/2009 06:23:21 PM
Very nice shot. The b&w conversion is especially nice. The composition is a bit off balance for me though.
03/13/2009 10:30:32 AM
Nice in B&W
03/13/2009 08:20:04 AM
Voted earlier coming back to leave a comment. Love the B&W tones in this one and the 'mood'/feel of a rainy day captured. This has such an artsy look for it is more about the mood captured here than the technicals of the shot. It is a dreary day one that calls for us to take shelter either in the car, under a walkway building or under an umbrella. This is very much a slice of everyday life the most don't spend too much thought about when we are occupying that space in time. I really get the feel of being there and feeling the moisture and dampness in the air. I like how we have the human element with the woman in the far left walking with her umbrella up. She is in silhouette and not in sharp focus in spots. Some portions of her like her legs are blurred but that just help to convey motion - and life is always in motion. I also noticed the name of the street she is going towards in the photo. "Meeting Street" makes me think of who she is going out to meet and why she has chosen today to do it. There is an unspoken story here and that is an underlying appeal that holds my attention as I create a story in my head to match the image.

Very nice composition. Love the natural frame and the girl with umbrella adds a nice story to it. 8
03/13/2009 12:28:50 AM
could be mistaken for an "ordinary" scene--that would be, well, a mistake. this is Wonderful, with composition, light, shadow, specular highlights, textures and tones all working gloriously together. 9
03/12/2009 09:10:36 PM
Cool framing on this shot.
03/12/2009 08:40:16 PM
That figure is SO 50's... Pity the car ain't :-)
03/12/2009 05:00:15 PM
Very moody.. the choice of black and white was a good one, I think!
03/12/2009 03:57:50 PM
I like it... Lots of visual depth
03/12/2009 02:12:43 PM
Excellent moody image..... 8
03/12/2009 12:43:37 PM
Awesome shot - this is right up my street (pun sort of intended...)
03/12/2009 11:16:40 AM
I like how she is completely in shadow.
03/12/2009 10:27:12 AM
Love the silouette
03/12/2009 09:41:42 AM
For me, this is deceptively simple. It appears very straightforward at first, but there's so much to look at. The textures, lights, contrasts, etc. Very enjoyable.
03/12/2009 07:26:08 AM
Good tonal range and lots to look at. The effect on the foreground pavers adds to the shot.
03/12/2009 12:49:43 AM
Who is going to meet on Meeting Street?
Definately a rainy day mood to this one.
03/12/2009 12:28:07 AM
wonderful shot. love the silhouette and the composition.
03/11/2009 08:45:27 PM
Shame about the cars. This would probably
03/11/2009 04:51:26 PM
Interesting juxtaposition of old and new. Very crisp image. The woman's silhouette, without any detail whatsoever, is almost lost.
03/11/2009 07:54:46 AM
Nice b&w conversion, I like the silhouette of the girl and the framing of the archway
03/11/2009 06:45:55 AM
There's a good eye behind the camera for this one.
03/11/2009 06:31:44 AM
Nice moody image with good story telling. Nice use of b&w and contrast. Wish the cars weren't so modern (but what can you do! and not that I would take that into account for voting purposes either. Just one of those "Oh, but what if...." kind of thoughts). Good luck: 7.

I get a real feeling of rain and bad weather from this picture.
03/11/2009 03:05:03 AM
I like this a lot... the water on the street and the time of day both add a lot to the feeling of the shot.
03/11/2009 01:11:47 AM
Nice B&W conversion, works well. - 7
