When I first saw this challenge I wasnt going to enter. Before I gave up tho I looked for fun things to do with them and found this.

Kusadama Flower Tutorial (a NEW LINK because the other one didnt work)

Being a big crafter (as most old ladies are) I had to do it. It was a ton of fun and if any of you have left over post its you should try it! I am now making a Spring wreath for my door. :=)

This is so unreal that I am having a hard time believing it! Two ribbons in one week? Jeez Luiz! I am wondering when this ride will stop but I wont want to get off. hahaha.

Thank you all so very much for your wonderful comments. You guys are really so cool I cant tell you. My time will come where I wont get ribbons. Right now I am still getting over the flu and have a broken tooth to care for so this is cheering me up. Thank you again.

I will answer some comments.

Time it took:

I have done a lot of crafting in my days so once I got one flower done and got my pace going it only took about 10 minutes to 15 minutes to complete one flower (thanks to my glue gun). I only made about 30 for this shoot (the back that cant be seen isnt done).

The time really flew because it was fun. I went on to make about 100 more because I loved them (and doing them) so much that I bought another pack of post-its to make a Spring wreath for my front door. In my spare time I enjoyed making a few more flowers and adding them on to an old Christmas plain pine wreath. I am going to have the florist make the bow to put in the empty space at the bottom of the wreath that shows now (I havent been able to do good bows yet). Another snow shower today so it will be a while before it goes on my door.

Exposure:

You are all right about that. The blue hue is because I had my camera on tungsten setting which I usually do when I shoot indoors but I usually only do that when I am using incandescent lighting. This time the only light I had was coming filtered through the window so the tungsten setting wasnt needed. I didnt give it much thought to change it. Once I get an idea I am like a train on full speed until I get the picture done and edited and in. hahaha. I didnt have proper lighting so I used a long exposure. I tried painting with light to but there were to many shadows.

Background so blue:

Blue is my favorite color. I wanted this to be really bright for a spring kind of pop because my first idea didnt happen. I wanted a picket fence and green grass and all of that for the background. I didnt have that so I put a bunch of poster board backgrounds up and chose the blue. Upping the saturation made it even bluer which I really loved but I guess it was a little to bright for some voters.

The size of the picture:

Sorry about that. I thought the 640 was big enough so I went with it.

Here is the set up. Not much money for props so I used a hamster ball that I dont use anymore and took the door off. I glued leafs all over it and then the flowers and inverted it to go over the top of a glass wine carafe neck. The vines inside the carafe were left over from the leafs I used on the hamster ball. I added water to it to make the vines look more real. I bought some babies breath to soften the whole thing up and added a couple of flowers I didnt use in solid colors to the bottom left.

I am so glad every one liked it and I hope it reminds you of Spring. We all could use some warmer weather!

I cant take a lot of credit for that really. I am happy to have won but there were so many great entries in this I was very nervous!

I was hoping this would win. Although I think the bg is too blue and it takes away from the post-it flowers but the flowers themselves are perfect.

Congrats.

Lovely display. The flowers are not difficult to fold, I know, but the display is what separates the casual folder from the pro. Nice work and I am glad to see it was appreciated. The exposure is pretty decent too.

That must have taken you hours to set up! Would love this with a different coloured background, unfortunately the blue is rather too dominating and spoils the shot for me. Otherwise brilliant composed, good focus and fun.

wonderful bouquet! I can't make my mind up about the blue cast, however. I think it flats it out and cools it down too much. I would love to see what it would look like with warmer tones. - 8

You have a LOT of time on your hands.... :-) Incredible amount of work. Love the idea and the details. There's a bit too much of a blue cast on the entire shot. I think this would have worked better if the "flowers" didn't also have a blue cast.

02/16/2009 01:43:04 PM
Man, this is a ribbon winning idea that got lost in the execution. Those flowers look great, and kudos for all of that work, but the photo is lacking. First, your white balance seems to be pretty far off. Everything (that should be white) is really blue. Second, the light is really flat. Third, and a big score dropper for me, is that the image is only 640px on the long edge. This is Advanced, bump it up to 720.
