Tyndall Gorge. From left to right.... Hallet's Peak, Tyndall Glacier and Flattop Mtn, as seen from the middle of Dream Lake. Three exposures, +1, 0, -1 camera stops. Detail enhancing tonemapping in PhotoMatix plug-in for Aperture. Conversion to b&w in Silver Efex Pro plug-in for Aperture.

Processed the 3 RAW images in Apple's Aperture. 0.6 & 0.9 soft graduated neutral density filters. The three exposures had bracketed shutter speeds of 1/13s, 1/5s and 1/30s.

[Jan. 26th, 2009 12:43:48 PM]

A few voters thought the blowing snow was a cloud. Just a wind gust blown wisp of snow. It is about 800' in height from the glacier low spot to the top of Hallet's Peak.... as tall as a city skyscraper.

[Jan. 27th, 2009 06:07:37 PM]

I think I struck a good histogram balance with this image. The monitors of voters vary. I've had comments about "blown out highlights" and comments regarding wanting "more contrast". This tells me that I'm in the middle of the viewers' wide range of monitor calibrations. Something I need to remember in the future.

Post Challenge: Thanks for all the good constructive criticism comments. I'm pleased with a 4th place.

Great shot! The wisp of snow is a great subsitute for Ansel's everpresent clouds. I absolutely love the Bear Lake area and this is so much better than anything I've ever been able to get there.

It would be nice if we could get the sun to come up in the west for awhile so we could shoot the Front Range in afternoon clouds and evening light wouldn't it? ;)

This has the composition of an Ansel Adam's shot, but not the editing. He makes the sky nearly black, and would have much more contrast in the mountains. I think you have the winning shot here, but only if you had edited it more in Ansel's style. Beautiful shot! Take care,
JD

Hmmm...the 1, 2, and 3 scorers kept you off the front page for sure. I wonder if it is time for some "mathematical" throwing out of lows and highs.

Ahhhhh yes. A MOST fitting scene to imitate Ansel Adams. Beautifully done!

Well done, I scored this well. You sound a bit bitter about the low votes, don't sweat the small stuff...you have a great photograph for the wall!

Lovely setting, I wonder if the contrasts could be a bit more dramatic, but I'm glad you didn't over-process this.

I really love this image. I'm not sure whether it is one of the places that Ansel actually shot at, but it looks like it. This image definitely fits the challenge well. The little bit of wind blowing the snow off the mountain really adds interest. Contrast and lighting are just right. -9

Now that's nice! Maybe my monitor is a bit bright but I would like to see some darker tones here.

Love this one, you are tied for first so far with an 8 from me. A little more contrast maybe. Not too much more however.

OMG. IMO you're giving the old master a run for his money here. Top marks. There's a couple of other strong contenders in the contest but for me, this one pinches it.

nice view, the mountains look great. The sky is not AA style, should have been darkened through b/w conversion

Really great Ansel approximation. The whipped up snow is stellar, but the sunny face is a tad overblown for perfection.

Nice. Now why don't I have access to scenes this to shoot?

this is beautiful! if the sky were a little darker, i think it might be a little more Adamsesque.
