Once I saw the sand challenge I knew what I was going to do. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN!!!!! And yes, the title is a quote from the movie;-) Thanks to my husband for suggesting it.

My eldest found this broken shell when we were on vacation in Venice, FL. I asked her for her Pirate's of the Caribbean Coin Amulet. The last thing I needed to borrow was my youngest Pirateology ship which is 3.5 inches in height Pirateology Toy Ship. I had to drill a small hole at the bottom of the ship so I could stick a wire in it so that I could then stick it in the sand. I also took some golden sand bought some time ago from a craft store as that I knew the beaches here do not have that rich gold tone color I wanted.

The kids and I then trotted down to the beach...boy was it packed! We picked a relatively less busy spot, but even then I sometimes had to wait for people to move out of the shot and make sure that kids playing football did not stomp on the ship.

I placed the ship 2 feet away from the shell checking every so often in my viewfinder that it was carefully positioned such that you can see it through the shell. I spread out the sand I then placed the aztec pirate coin in the sand. I then focused on coin knowing that the ship and the ocean would be blurred - gotta love bokeh effect.

This is a remarkable setup, I love the whole feel to the shot. I love the visual interest throughout.Possibly would be a bit more captivating if there was a bit more detail of the shell perhaps? I am still amazed at the amount of creativity that you put into all of your shots, Great job with the setup and the concept overall.

Nice concept shot. I think the technicals could have been better, but the focus on the "doubloon" is fabulous. 7

I like the idea and composition, but the lighting doesn't fit with the background which kinda spoils the illusion...

Hmmm. Overall I like it. I wonder what it would look like with no medallian and the shell having the focus point. Three subjects in a scene may be one too many (four if you count the sand).

as my personal opinion the medal is unhelpful, a most centered boat should be better.

interesting concept, would have liked the sea shell to have sharper focus I think though. Little more DOF, otherwise great!

Great set up. Is that Johnny Depp on the bow??

This I think is brilliant. Either you have incredible resources to have the ship harbored in the bay, or you have a great background and DOF that makes it believable. Either way, fantastic job.

difficult to get the balance right - eyes keep jumping from one element to another (certainly interesting though)
Was it taken at home in front of a b.g. picture?
good luck
