Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Stars (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Custom Made Pinhole
Date: Dec 9, 2008
Aperture: f/250
ISO: 100
Shutter: 981 seconds
Galleries: Pinhole/Zone Plate
Date Uploaded: Dec 13, 2008

A 981 second pinhole capture of the stars in the Northern Hemisphere. Unfortunately, none of the anticipated star trails were registered - the "stars" are (Bayer) sensor noise, hot pixels, possibly some light pollution, and an overheated sensor.
Very little processing, some desat of the blue noise stars...

I loved the comments as much as the image.

ETA: You have set the bar high for pinhole challenge entries. I'm 0 for 2 in breaking the 5 barrier!

haha i got a good laugh out of reading the comments made during voting! :D
i think the purple circles are actually also hot pixels from the sensor overheating during the long exposure. i got those on a few long exposure shots on my D50, except they were blurred because i shot at an open aperture. but with your f-stop at 250ish the hot pixels are clearly visible as such. definately not a light leak.
great shot! ;)

eta: i think you should also get a price for "sharpest pinhole shot evah"! lol

I don't know. This is at about 100% crop and there were similar half circles on the bottom of both sides. I'm guessing it is where the sensor (or Bayer filter) mounts to the camera? Or maybe a light leak? Definitely nebulous.

Reading your comments... So this is just post-processed noise? Impressive.

That is freakin' amazing! I have noticed that pinholing really does show sensor noise and hot pixels quite nicely, but how the heck did you get the whole bit on the left? And 'grats on an amazing pinhole score - you da man!

Oh, for crying out loud this is brilliant. Love the title. Congrats on busting the pinhole score ceiling!

Great shot! As a young H.S. kid I used to do a lot of telescope and microscope photography. I hope everyone appreciates your work here... 8

Good work. I like the suspense of the cluster of stars just off the frame.

Very cool shot. I love how intense this is, although I want to see more of the gas on the left.

Somehow, with all the pink, I can't help but be reminded of Horton Hears a Who.

It's pretty, but to be honest, when I saw it I thought it looked like a picture someone would do on Paint. Maybe this is because of blur?

Pretty colours though, good effort.

An interesting image - I have no experience in this sort of photography so I don't know how this compares to what is possible.

Really? Wow! It almost looks fake as in made out of confetti or coloured sand or something. Beautiful colours.
