I used my 580 Canon flash, it was set for stroboscopic use, 3 Htz, 2 pops

Thanks everybody for voting and the comments. I would probably not take this picture if it wouldn’t be for the DPC Olympics III, so thanks Olympics for making me to experiment. I have just got a message from DPC that my picture was validated, which was essential for our result and the Gold in this edition of the Olympics. Thanks all participants of the Olympics and especially team Iceland for making us (team Poland) to work hard! The setup was quite easy, I constructed from 2x4s a stand where I placed big nail, put it in my bath tub covered it with black clothing and taped the fabric to the wall by the tub. I suspended the balloon on a very heavy plastic line attached to a curtain pole which I moved into the middle above the bath tub, and started experimenting with swinging balloons and exposure. I used my 580 EX flash in multi mode . You can set the flash to how often the strobe flashes, how many times and how strong is the pop. After experimenting with about 40 balloons I got satisfactory results. There was not too much to clean after. I should mention that the pictures were taken in complete darkness and the flashes of the strobe made the exposure. I submitted the picture which my family and friends liked the most, not the one I liked, which you can see here.

This is a great example of why you can't judge on a thumbnail. I almost didn't even look at this shot (I joined after voting had concluded) but WOW I am glad I did. Great shot and congrats on your win! It looks deserved!

Very cool, I have wanted to try this for a while....the only thing is it is before and after, and it seems that you have the after before the before.....I don't know....

12/13/2008 02:06:52 PM
Very neat. I like the fact the angle of both balloons is exactly the same. I sure this was very tricky to shoot. 8

While I think this shot is neat (and probably took a lot of skill and shots to capture at just the right moment), it seems a little flat to me somehow. Maybe its the lighting?

I LOVE IT! Wow, what perfect timing. I'm wondering how many tries it took to get this? Right after the balloon broke, but before the water could accelerate out of shape. Creativity, execution, even the simple orange frame. 10 from me. Well done!
