Coyote carrying back legs and haunches of a mule deer. Most likely, the deer was killed by a mountain lion. The coyote is simply doing his scavenger thing. Coyotes, even in a pack, rarely bring down a healthy deer or elk. Mountain lions are night stalkers and are the primary predator of the mule deer herd. Mule deer populations are large, so nature attempts to balance via the food chain interactions.

I am SO jealous of this shot... nicely done... snow cooperated with you too.
I hear the coyotes in this spot are fairly human tame... do you see them lots?
I got to go there.

This is a pretty cool picture. I'm sure capturing an image like that is hard. I like how line is shown in the legs of the carcass in the coyote's mouth.

I tried to leave a comment about 10 minutes before turnover but the site wouldn't let me. In a nutshell, I thought this was a fantastic shot. The contrast between the nothingness that remains of the deer's upper body and the completely intact legs makes this quite powerful. Congrats on your 12th place finish.

12th place is not too shabby compared to the over photoshopped entries. a great photograph that captures a unique moment in time means far more than one that can be recreated by anyone

Wow, what a great catch. The snow falling also add a lot of atmosphere to the photo. I like how well you can see the wolves eyes.

Superb natural history photo; perhaps just a little more space in the frame would strengthen it even more, but nonetheless excellent capture.
