Taken on a very foggy morning, just outside Ottawa at about 7:30 in the morning. Processing included, after tweaking in DPP, in no particular order, levels, curves, hue/sat, selective colour, noise removal, some light D&B, and then cropped, reduced image size, another light USM pass, and saved for the web.

Edit (after voting):
Thanks everyone for the great score and the very nice comments. to expand on what someone said in a comment, this was a combination of a great long lens, fairly tame deer and a whole lot of luck to be in the right place at the rigth time. Thanks again.

I'm going to own up and let you know that I gave one of the conspicuously low marks. Now I have read your description, I really should justify it and apologise.

When I looked at this image I thought it was a still life - the 'static-ness' and the difference in the foliage colour at what appears to be a fixed point in the middle distance made me think this was a shot of an exhibit at a natural history museum. The background looks like a painting and the foreground looks separated and still. And overall the lighting doesn't look like daylight.

Now I've read your description, I find I have to reconsider my score.

Apologies again, but I thought you deserved an explanation.

Puts the viewer precariously close to the imminent action - excellent!

I like the way you've used mist to separate foreground and background. Gives the photo nice depth.

I love this image. Great nature drama in a natural setting. Masterful control of exposure and focus, with very effective differential contrast (fog). Top score from me. (10)

Powerful lens or fairly tame deer? Great depth of field and colour.

It looks too perfect to be real. Like a display at the Natural History Museum. Still it looks perfect. 9

wow, you've either got a great hide or a great zoom lens! Very nice capture, I like the stag further back, really adds something extra to this.

Very cool shot with the stag eyeing the doe and looking quite macho.

This looks like a painting... like "no way a person actually got a shot of them so perfectly arranged". *grin* Well done. I hope this does well for you. (not voting yet)
