traced periodic table onto glass sheet with a permanent marker. My son behind the glass. Natural sunlight from big window

and this is Best Beloved helping with the initial set up:

Post Challenge: Thanks for the great comments - the tons of views and the high score. My score was all over the place this week - dropped to a 5.8 at one point and then did a slow slow climb up to 6.6 and then the last few votes dropped it to 6.5 again. It worked out well. I know the writing is backwards to Finn, a few reasons for that - none of which are important now...

This was one of my favorites from this challenge and remains an outstanding photograph even though the challenge has long since passed.

Those 1's make me cross as they cancel out the 10's. This DID meet the challenge, but well done for this in any case!

Congrats Caroline! I knew this was yours the second I saw it, you've definitely got a style (and a familiar model). I thought for sure this one was going to place 3rd.

One of my faves as well. Congrats on the top5. I recognized the young lad , from the shot where he was painting the airplane model :) Didn't rememer from which challenge it was from though.

Ah! Good to see this on the front page.
In my opinion, it should have scored even higher.

Anyway, heartiest Congratulations on your 5th place!

Of course, I have liked this picture very much and this is going straight into my favorites (and 1st one to get this honor. He He!).

regards,
Vikram

One of my picks for a ribbon. Wonderful presentation. I love the lighting on the face and that the table is soft enough to not be too distracting.

really good use of focus and subject matter

This is very well executed, it's awful hard to write backwards;) Other than the point of the pencil, however, there is little that screams Tungsten, so, while I question the choice of title, that has little (if any) effect on scoring. Nice shot!

nice DOF between the boy and the periodic table!

I really enjoy how "scientific" the kid looks, I like that you chose to focus on him instead of on the periodic table, would love to see how you made this.

fantastic portrait, I love it. One thing I am kind of wondering about is why he is writing "backwards". I understand it is to help us see what he is writing, but it feels a little bit contrived. Anyway, great work!

Finally a good image conveying the elements. Good use of b/w and perfect model for the job.

Crop is perfect and looks great in a nearly square cut.

I really like this!

Not exactly sure how you did this, but I like the image. It strikes me that his eye is focused on the camera rather than on what he is supposedly writing on.

Love the way this pictur has been conceptualized!
Though I can't vote, you get my vote of appreciation, 10.

Surely one of the best pictures that I have seen @DP. Will be eager to see how it fares. Best of Luck!

Great idea and execution. Hmm, this poor boy seems to be writing everything backwards though. Oh well, it makes it easy for us to read.

the challenge was to take an interesting, creative photo of one of the elements of the periodic table. while a nice photo, for me this doesnt really meet the challenge.

Paul ponders the final stumper in the Bayside High School spelling bee. Could he remember how to spell the word for a popular sandwich cookie?

I expect this one to place high. Don't disappoint me.
