Finally convinced my two kids to do some roleplaying, took them into the rainforest at the back of our house and sat them in a bush turkey nest..
Added a vignette in lightroom, then in CS3 burnt the light parts out, inc contrast, removed noise, inc saturation, adjusted colour levels, added a violet filter, gaussian blur around the bushes, burnt again, cropped. Came back again and reloaded with highlights taken out plus a bit of extra crop.

All that work really paid off. Wonderful illustration. That's an amazing tree, and the kids are perfect. Congratulations on a fine image, your PB, and the top ten placement.

awesome that you got top 10! well done Trish

Actually, the tree should have been a giveaway that it was southern hemisphere...is that a Moreton Bay thingy tree?

This does have a scary feel to it. I like your use of the tree roots as a shelter for the children.

excellent feel of being lost and cold - the heavily burned background adds nicely to the dark and foreboding feel

Brilliant setting, the huge tree roots really make it fairytale-ish for me.

I think you captured the mood well. They look alone and scared. I noticed a little JPEG artifacting around the girls face and looked at the file size. 64k. You probably lost some detail due to compression. Fortunately it's not very noticeable and I am sure to be the only one to mention it.

Wherever did you find such a great tree!! Fantastic. I like your lighting on this - it creates the appropriate mood of Hansel and Gretel and the fright of the night.

This shot makes it a very great interpretation of this story. It's a bit dark and tends to wash out the definition though. Nicely done.

what a great tree! the only way it could be better in my opinion is if Gretel's skirt was a different color to provide a more vivid color spectrum, but that is nitpicky. nice capture.

Looks like it could have been taken from the pages of their book! 8
