This was my first attempt up Mt. Baker in Washington State. This shot was taken just below the edge of the crater (see steam and sulfur rising in gap behind us) as we crossed a large crevasse and before the start of the final push up the Roman Wall to the summit. About 700 vertical feet short of the summit, despite what it appears here, weather moved in from below us and we had to retreat back to base camp. We hope to try again using a different route next season.

Post Vote:
A new photo for my front page! Thanks to those who took the time to vote and to those who went even further and commented. I know I complained a bit in the FS thread about my score steadily dropping from a personal best (and a 7.3 no less!) after something like 50 votes but even with not making the 7.0 mark it is still great to have a new front pager.

For those interested in seeing more of the climb:

I just read all about this trek, sounds like quite an adventure, and something I would love to take part in one day. Shame you were so close to the summit and had to turn back that is just the way things work sometimes. You still came back with great pictures and you made it most of the way, so I'd call it a success :D

Very good lines and angle. Wonderful adventure. What's next, Rainier?
A hiker myself, but not much in the love for snow. :)

Not sure which volcano this might be, but it doesn't matter. You have managed to capture very well the ascetic of climbing and the accidental beauty of a climb that will occasionally knock your eyes out! Thank you.

Really gives an impression of the achievement and I really like the composition, the wonderful vivid blue of the sky and the few bright items in their clothing and bags.

Wow, brilliant shot. The textures and patterns are all clearly visible in the white snow, well done.
