Growing up, I always remember seeing these guys in my various field guides and being frustrated that they did not range into my area.
Photographically, this is one of the most effective and cool uses of shallow DoF I've seen. The way the web almost completely vanishes, leaving the spider hovering, is quite the visual effect.

How cool is this! Perfect placement of that bubble of bokeh behind the critter. And very nice use of that sexy lens.

You've nailed the composition on this one. One of the stand-outs in a challenge of really high calibre.

OH, cool. I hope this being a bug shot does not doom it, because it's really good, and the use of the shallow DOF is very effective.

the smooth and rich background is in such contrast to the sharpness and ferocity of the spider

This is a beautiful image. I love macro shots like these. I only wish that there was not that distracting purple spot and the focal point was more to the left or right for a better composition. Having the web at an angle would also have been a nice touch. But i love this photo. => 9

Cool shot; that bit of light in the background perfectly surrounds the spider and complements the actual light coming from below. This wouldn't work nearly as well if he were shot against one of the darker parts of the background.

Great Shot, altho they seems to be too much empty space below.

lovely smooth bokeh. pleasing cool colors. and the subject is nicely lit and isolated against the bright spot of background. Aside from all that I really like it. ;)
