Challenge: Product Shot (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D

We lost power yesterday afternoon and as of five am monday its still out. Once its back on I will edot my details. Aimees crackberry aint the easiest thing to use. TY all for the ribbon.

Still out of power but now I am hanging out at church while Aimee gets ready for work.

This is my friend Dave. Dave is willing to do most anything I ask. I saw the challenge and had no interest in it mainly because I don't enjoy non portrait type shots anymore. I dont enjoy shooting setup shots of items. And then I thought of a cigar shot. I didn't want to use me again and I wasn't sure how detailed I could get my idea anyways. I twisted Daves arm to allow me to shoot him puffing a cigar. Dave is a good sport.

Since everyone likes the lighting here is the setup. Shot in Daves garage with a decent amount of ambient light. The background is a sheet of black velvet draped over his SUV. 430ex off a silver umbrella almost directly in front of him but just slightly to his right. 580exII on camera as master only. Had him take a big mouth full and then slowly push it out. I use ETTL for all of my shots so I just let the flash do its thing. If you are interested in the camera settings you will have to wait til the power gets back on. I cant remember what they were. Though I do remember that the ISO was at 640 (I forgot to turn it back after doing some non flash test shots).

I didn't read the description til after I got home and edited this image. Let me just say thank you for the ribbon on a DNMC. I almost didnt enter it. This is an image I would expect to see in a magazine rather than an image I would expect to see in a catalog. I do like this image though and I am glad so many others did as well. TY!

This photo was an obvious ribbon choice. Majority rules! That's why we have a democratic voting system. Cry babies, them.

This one is really an amazing shot in all respects. Great pose and an incredible lighting. Keeping the "meeting-the-challenge" part apart, this is definitely my fav. Great work!

Not so sure this is DNMC. I could picture this in "Cigar Aficionado". It has a real glossy magazine feel to it, very pro looking.

Hey, this is pretty damn good for a ribbon, but what really impresses me is the DNMC part. What better rebellion against bad challenge descriptions then to ignore them and get ribbons anyway? You're like the Fidel Castro of DPC! Here, have another cigar!

closer up showing more product and less model would have met the challenge better IMHO,great shot tho...congrats

You did it, give that man a cigar!
Oh, he's already got one. I think a closup crop the the cigar, would've worked, "Too".

This was my favorite in the challenge...just the sense of mood and feeling gives it more than a product shot..it's almost like the opening of a movie trailer.

Well done Tim, and your portraits are growing in stature each and everyday you do them..... I always get so much pleasure out of your images, as many of them are so 'emotive', and so you.

First impression was wow! But inspection of the smoke coming out of the mouth is bothersome - just something weird about it. Other than that, one of my top choices!

Very smooth, literally. ;) I would say the product id is a little elusive, although I'm sure a cigar afficionado would recognize the label instantly. Nice lighting. As it relates to a portrait shot, I would suggest a bit of back lighting to separate the man's shoulder from the BG.
