Challenge: Doors (Basic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSLR-A700
Lens: Sony SAL16-80Z DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA
Location: St.Benoit du Lac, Quebec Canada
Date: Aug 15, 2008
Aperture: f6.3
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/8
Galleries: Architecture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Aug 18, 2008

Shot at St.Benoit du Lac's abbey, where monks devote their life to silence and contemplation. It was so peaceful there, the word Heaven came to mind naturally. However, the monks do not have great taste when it comes to decoration... The tiles were one color, the walls another and there was colored glass in the windows, casting green all around. It could only work in B&W.

How I wished this would have been Advanced Editing rules! The ceiling called for some dodging on the white inlays... Oh well! i just want this to take me to the next round of the tourney!

Entered as my Week 4 entry in the Better than Average Tourney.

Post-Challenge:

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! First ribbon!! You guys cannot imagine how I feel. This is too much. All week, it kept hovering around 6.5 but I never expected this would have been sufficient to get a ribbon. Thanks for all the great comments and the super scores.

This is soooo cool! :D

This is what it looked like in colors.

I'm sure some people have nightmares in this orgy of clashing colors...

WHAT!!!! Note to self: lens correction tool = STRETCHING the image!

What a bummer! *sigh* Well they say the best way to learn is the hard way. This one is hard enough - I think the lesson will stick for good :(
09/03/2008 03:04:32 PM
Oh, no! Well, don't take the DQ too hard. It's still a great shot, and people make editing mistakes pretty regularly. Just learn what was wrong and avoid it going forward.

Hey, HUGE congrats on the ribbon! (And my favorite color of ribbon at that!) You've got more than just good photography chops - you have a great eye and a great sense of what makes an interesting photograph. Very pleased to see it rewarded here. I also thank you for the added words of explanation about the place. Looks to be a wonderful place to visit. Now go find a nice place to hang that shiny ribbon on your wall!

Congratulations on not only a stunning image, a wonderful score, but the bonus of a ribbon! Well deserved. I love this picture, but was surprised at the original. It really (in my opinion) lacks the massive impact you gave it by converting it. Great eye! Wonderful image.

Félicitations pour le 1er ruban ! Il y en aura d'autres... C'est une très belle photo et le noir et blanc était une bonne idée :)

Very cool! Congratulations for the ribbon!

Nice to see another "neighbor" here, too.

P.S. As I can guess from the color version, the tile colors could be symbolic. The four added colors in the floor remind me of Earth, Fire, Air and Water. And maybe even Metal (black - Metal is the 5th element in oriental lore).

Impressive tonal range. I would like to see more of the open doorway. Crop is a little too tight for my taste, but still conveys the mood well. A little hot in the highlights. I'd like to see this in advanced editing.
