OMG! Thanks!! For the ribbon, the super score, the comments and the 4 favourites. I certainly didn’t expect a ribbon with 6.7 and had hoped for top ten.
These are clear plastic drinking straws. It’s the first time I’ve seen them here but could only get them in a box of 500! So I now have enough straws for the rest of my life ;-)
Btw, I agree that the title is pretty lame ;-)

p/s: congrats on the ribbon though.

It's been a (very ;-) long time since I went to school but I do remember that geometry is the mathematics of shape and space.

you're right - mathematics exists all around us. in fact, everything around us are designed with mathematical calculations. but we never see them and think of maths (or geometry) because they are not given mathematical names. they say they phi is everywhere

I am a little confused after reading your answer. I understand you were thinking the straws are related to geometry, when you took this picture?
So, did you also think "4+2+4", is related to geometry? Could it be some old theorem about straws's sum, we have forgotten? Maybe "the IreneM's theorem"? :-)
You are a good photographer, no doubt. Congratulations, Irene

wow Irene another one to add to my fav's,
the title might not be understood or the right choice but after all you can have a picture of anything a start dissecting it with mathematics back to its origin, I also have to say your a great inspiration and one of the reason's i like photography keep up the great work
  Photographer found comment helpful.
08/27/2008 10:09:20 AM
actually the link to geometry is not obvious, a different title would have helped- I was kind of wondering about the topicality of this myself before i saw your post. But super picture as always.

just as I'm thinking I might play again, I see this place second to apples with numbers on them. And then I realize...

I can't help but wonder if you fit a horse into the magic kitchen.

The title could've been "500 - 10 = 490". I think you have enough ribbons for the rest of your life, too (never enough). It's gotta be the camera. Where are the water droplets!
You'r the Best in category.

Of course this portrays mathematics.
If nothing else, think geometry!

for Irene's imagination. Oh dear...

Irene Fun Fact #3: Ribbon Hogtress

With this ribbon she has now won a staggering 30 ribbons! What is more frightening is she may be drowning in her own ribbons since she apparently can't get to her the computer to check that she has won 7 ribbons when scoring 6.7 or less. Ribbon hogtress extraordinaire, only has one weakness and that is she thinks she never has a chance. That's probably not a weakness but that's the best I could find. :P

Although this is of your normal, perfect image quality and creativity, it just didn't say "math" to me... I'm surprised at the ribbon this time... not on the quality, of course. It's perfect in the technical.

Irene, congrats. You are on quite the roll with ribbons lately, and in my humble opinion ... they are absolutely well deserved. Congrats, big time. Your eye (for the unusual and simple beauty) is unmatched.
Love it, really do. And ... if you can take shots like this who needs to be a killer with the title? You are very good at letting the photo speak for itself.

I sit down many a times saying to myself "ok u dont have a subject , forget it" ... then some fine morning i see u on the front page and again say to myself " look more , look through irene's eyes". this photo is still not 'mathematics' to me but all ur photos together are 'science' of its own kind to me. u r half the inspiration why i buy a macro lens , u r half the reason why i pick up my camera again, u r the complete reason why my words fail here again ....

You're title isn't very creative, IMO, but your shot is tremendous. It took me a bit to figure out they were bendy straws. It almost looks like some sort of energy reactor. Awesome lighting and super sharp. Great abstract. Could this be IreneM?

Wonderfuly shot photo, but mathematically themed, IMO is tentative at best. I *suppose* geometry is mathematics at the base sense.
