TOTALLY set up. I don't claim to be a make up artist, but just in case someone thought this was real...it's NOT. :)

Very intense shot. Like the powerful atmosphere and emotions it conveys. But I'm surprised it only got 5.8 at the time. But I guess some people here felt uneasy with it?

You've got real talent for photography and your pics are inspiring :)

Heather, I gave this a 10 during the week, but knowing that it was by you makes it so much more meaningful. It's a very powerful photo. Great work.

A haunting image, beautifully (if that's the right word!) conveying the emotion of the situation. I hope you do well in the overall results!

Captures the feeling of the moment wonderfully. Excellent work and a well deserved 10. - floyd

This photo is really quite disturbing (which is good for the challenge). It conveys real emotion.

The contrast seems to be slightly wrong on the girls face but IMO this only adds to the feeling of the photo. The uneven lighting on the background wall only add to the focus on the girl. 9/10

I think it is a very good picture. The challenge is certainly met. The only thing which bothers me a little is not that the face is out of focus, but that the wall is as it distracts a bit. But a powerful picture nevertheless. 8

The power of your message and what you've depicted here are really strong. I hope the shot is set up and not something you just had the opportunity to capture. The composition is good. I like the "back against a wall" element. THe focus and the listing are what prevent me from scoring this higher. THe focus seems to be on the texture of the wall rather than her face. Not sure if your camera lets you control the focal point or if it has to be center-weighted, but thought I'd explain my impressions. 6, just-married

Hi Heather (or did I guess wrong about who took it?)
I like the idea behind this - it's interesting to show wrath without showing the perpetrator him/herself. Just the results of that wrath instead.
I'm only giving it a 5 overall because I don't think it's as strong technically as it is conceptually. I don't like the background, and it's shadowy lower area, the focus is too soft for my tastes and the soft toy seems a little too blown out.
I do like the composition and the emotive nature of the image.

Great expression on the model's face - I sincerely hope this was posed. It is a shame that the pattern on the wall is more in focus than the girl. (5) MarkRob

very sad picture. I feel her pain.

i really like this. i love the composition--it makes it seem she is just cringing in the corner, very afraid. i also like the softer focus on her face, it seems to accentuate the bruises and the sadness of the photo. very nice work, 9--alecia

ok. a couple things. 1) i hope that this was staged and not real. 2) i dont know if you intended to do this or not but the point of focus is on the wall and not the girl. this makes the girl blurry whereas look how sharp the wall is. the best thing to do for that would be to point the center of your camera at her face, partilally depressing the button to get the focus to lock on her face, then with the button still partly pressed, reframe and shoot. i think that having her sharp would increase the pathos of the picture. with it blurred, i feel that we're too detached from her reality to feel it as strongly. i hope that is helpful to you. mag99

I want to reach out and comfort this child...very powerful image. I think that the slight fuzziness of the subject adds to the image of an insane situation.

Good work. As the viewer, I can almost feel her pain. I like the addition of the teddy bear, it gives a feeling of trying to go back to the innocence of childhood, or the like. The focus on the wall being sharp, and the girl being "not sharp" is kinda distracting, but it may add to the discord of her "life." Jury still out on that. karmat

Wow. this looks really real. Well set up if not. Background needs a little more even lighting, and it might work better if it were a touch darker. 6 nards656

Powerful. The kind of shot that can move people and hopefully make a differance in a life. The one small nitpick I have is the lower right corner... That dark patch kept pulling me away from the subject and lessened the impact (at least for me) ~ MyQyl ~

Shocking. (insert several minutes of quiet contemplation)
This image saddens me, and makes me think hard about the sins commited. I'm finding it hard to complement this because of the content, but hopefully you get where I'm coming from. I'm scoring it highly.
*Please* tell us it's just make-up.

Really emotional photo. I like the composition, half and half. I think its great how everything has a red tint (a very distressing colour) except for the bear which is a cool blue. It shows how much comfort the person gets from the bear.

-10 for the teddy bear! :) just kidding, the teddy bear adds to the image instead of just being cute. Pure sadness on the model, photo is not technically perfect but the feeling is there. Have you tried B&W or Sepia? might be some interesting effect there i think. Captured very well, i can feel her pain (wraith, envy, whatever, doesn't matter). I like if not for the technical resasons (slightly blurred). 9 paganini (that's my first teddy bear 9 by the way, would've work wonders for me as a childhood submission as well)

the impact of this photo would increase 10 fold if the face was more in focus... however still a powerful photo
