Challenge: Point of Color (Advanced Editing VII*)
Collection: Challenges 2008
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: Parking lot at work
Date: Jul 3, 2008
Aperture: f/10
ISO: 250
Shutter: 1/50
Date Uploaded: Jul 3, 2008

This is probably one of the most literal interpretations of a challenge I've entered in a long time. It is so far inside the box that the sides of the box are not even visible from here. There is a point of color. It even comes to a point. And there's an arrow pointing to the point of color. The background is naturally black and white. The color is naturally orange. No artificial ingredients were added (unless you consider I moved the point of color to that point in the parking lot, as it really resides normally in a back corner of the parking lot, and left turns are indeed allowed at this particular arrow. Why this cone sits on a space in the back corner of the parking lot is unknown to me, however.)

Processing, from my little notes that CS3 keeps track of for me in Bridge:

Crop.
Levels layer (45,251)
Curves layer (Factory preset, medium contrast)
Flatten image
Duplicate image
High pass, radius 28.9 (OK, LOTS of high pass); blending mode set to overlay, opacity reduced to 61%
New layer, circular gradient, reversed (ie light in the center, dark on the edges); free transform - stretch the layer over the picture to drag the dark parts to the edges. (And here I thought I changed the blending mode to soft light - I usually do - but the little log that CS3 keeps doesn't say so. I did reduce the opacity some.)
Dodged a couple bits of light gray near the top, burned a few of the cracks on the white arrowhead.
Converted to sRGB, resized, added a 4 pixel white border.

Score prediction? Somewhere in the 5.2-5.6 range, maybe? But you gotta admit, folks, it meets the challenge. :-)

Oh. And I was shooting at f/10 because of a comment Posthumous made on another shot I took of a parking lot arrow ages ago.

Didn't even realise this was one of yours - which is funny really because it is a typical quirky look on life.

Well spotted - and well captured with just the right title to set it off.

Ha! Literalists, take that! :) Your notes, as always, add so much to the shot. And add me, again, to SandyP's "turning mundane into art" fan club.

This is one of best photos in the challenge. Meets the challenge head on and then makes sure you get the point!! Shame there are still some dopes here who think it should score under 5. Great shot, Deb!

Deb, I second SandyP you can take pictures of the most mudane stuff and turn it into art that I would frame and hang on my wall.

I love your style, Deb! You make the most ordinary things look like something that would look awesome hanging on a wall in the right decor!

DNMC!!!!!!

That is not a point it is a cone!!

Great photo Deb, I really liked it when I saw it in voting although I did worry whether other people would get it as sometimes images can see to slip past voters. My faith is restored

Funny and well executed.

Maybe it is so inside that it is out! Lovely minimalism, stunning photo of practically nothing.

I love this! Very original, basic yet to the point! (get it...to the point.) Seriously though, one of the best I've seen so far for absolutely meeting the challenge! I don't tell my scores, but you should make a nice little bump up I hope!
