Ok, it doesn't look all that exciting, but what it lacks in interest, it made up for in being a pain in the neck to shoot! :)

I tied a thread through the can and dangled it between two posts with a black backdrop and two lights.

When I released the shutter, I let the can stay still at its lowest point for about two seconds. Then I gradually raised the can to give the blur effect.

In the end, it's supposed to look as though the can is falling into the carbage can.

Very Cleaver, I woundered why the can moved halfway down! If you had cleaned the bin or used a more interesting bin you probably would have got FIRST!

how come yu just didn't calculate shutter speed and a distance of say .5 feet derived from an acceleration of gravity equation with the acceleration of gravity being 33.3 feet persecond and threw in a few guestimates asure seems easier than that :O but regardless of method of derived results, its an impressive photo, really enjoyed it, as well as your creativity in capturing it, doubt I could have done better, and if I were to try, then its only your idea regurgitated through my means LOL, greta job :) enjoyed :)

First, I'd like to thank the Academy... (oops! Wrong acceptance speech!)

Seriously, I'm thrilled to have the top shot of the week -- how exciting!! Thanks to everyone who left some really good comments on how I could have improved this further. I really like the idea of using a nice steel can as a couple people had suggested, and John is right about the fact that the can itself is a little brighter than it should be in spots.

This was a lot of fun (and work!) to put together, and I've learned quite a bit from the experience of doing this shot, as well as from the comments it received.

Since some folks had asked for a more detailed description of how this was executed, I put a page together to describe it in more detail: //www.thefreeds.com/swish

Again, many thanks to all!

I think you may have oversharpened this a bit, and unfortunately the waste basket isn't as level as the can, but the composition is good and you obviously put some effort into it! :)

Your garbage can is crooked. I know...you're thinking. "is that all she has to say? what a stupid comment". But it is the first thing that stood out to me. Then the really cool effect with the can. Must have been a pain in the neck to shoot that to get it right. So see, that is the only thing I really have to complain about. The garbage can is crooked. Technically well done, although lacking in overall excitement...it's garbage. You did what you needed to do, and that is that. And did I mention cool effect with the can. Good luck in the challenge. ~Hbunch7187~

Very nice. Nice refreshing shot after all the junk I've been voiting on :) I'll give it a 10 'cause I like it alot. I would have liked it a tad better if the garabage can would have been slightly tilted to the left.

Oh, this could be the one... very slick... my one small beef however, everything is "almost" symmetrical... this shot seems to want to be centred. (that IS how "centred" is spelled, thank-you very much! ;oP) 9. whobee

very nice work! I think the exposure on the can may be just a little hot... I'm assuming that this can motion in the shot was in the upward direction... Maybe just a little shorter pause and then a slower pull on the can would have worked out better... regardless, you get a 10 for a well thought out photo... great work :) - setzler

Very clever - I want to know how this was done - relatively long exposure to capture the trails with a flash triggered to capture the can perhaps ?
Excellent - I wondered whether the bin was necessary - but eventually concluded that in the context of the current challenge it would be less of a photo without.

A definite 10.

Great color - crop either closer in on the left or furhter out to the right (I prefer to the right) to gain better symmetry. (9) MarkRob
