Last week I had to travel to northern Peru for work, and took my ph gear hoping to have a chance to shoot a starry night sky or an interesting old couple for the Tuesday challenges. No luck at all with weather, but I knew I couldn’t find better subjects for this challenge when I saw this old miner and his wife in a crowded rural flea market. The only issue was to compose the shot in the middle of a BUSY place and bg, while setting the sb800 in manual mode for fill light.

About processing, I chose duotone and was tempted to clone out a piece of the roof in the upper right (just the tip, to avoid the intersection with the lady's hat), but was afraid to break the editing rules. Just a little manual hdr for the sky and the usual stuff. I really like this image. Hopefully a 6.5+, but you never know in dpc.

Thanks to everyone for your votes and nice comments.

I DEDICATE THIS RIBBON TO OUR MATE SEAN’S MEMORY AND FAMILY.

Alfredo, think photo is absolutely AMAZING! I'm really glad you didn't clone out the little area of roof, as I think it adds atmosphere and sense of place to the image. one of the most evocative I've seen for a long time. Congratulations!

this is a mind blowing photo! I didnt have a chance to vote in this challenge, but when I saw this on the homepage I was just stunned! This is fantastic. The story you tell with this photo is great. I didnt even notice the roof intersecting with her hat until you mentioned it. I like the duotone, takes us to another time. Great job!

I love this, what is it about the faces of individuals so different from our own that sets them apart as a great subject to capture??
the eyes faces, & the expressions speak volumes and I think the duotones did this justice, although I always tend to favor the original, complete with "flaws" and reality of what we saw.

you were lucky to meet this pair, not for the photo op per se,but for the chance to interact and exchange a bit of yourselves in the process of photgraphing them.

Bravo Alfredo!

Lovely shot - I always feel humble seeing people from this area - life is so tough for them, and it reflects in their faces. I am glad I live in Britain - I am 60, and retired early, and I have a pension - I don't know how old this couple is, but he seems to have to work, and I can't imagine how I would manage in his situation. I wish it were better for them. Thanks for showing this image, it makes me want to do something to improve things there - any ideas, anyone? I think the toning is just perfectly right, and personally, I think the roof on the right sets the place more exactly - with it gone, it harder to place them, with it, I can almost see the street they live on
