Removed the vacuum from the bulb by drilling a hole through the base. Taped the wires to the back and hooked it up to a dimmer switch. Exposed to air, the filament quickly burns out. The bulb will light for a few seconds as the filament fries and gives off some smoky goodness.

Used the dark field lighting method, where a large light source (actually a 580ex bounced off my while backdrop) is behind the object with just a small black card behind the bulb covering the camera's field of view.

Beautiful! How many bulbs did it take to get the shot, & weren't you afraid of getting shocked? Where did you get the idea for this in the 1st place?

Awesome capture. Love the feel of this... you've realy done a great job of capturing the moment (or second). Incredible clarity... it has a very surreal feel to it - and that's pretty hard, seeing as it's a lightbulb ;o) Extremely well done.

This is so my kinda shot :)
Great job with the execution of the shoot. Looks perfect. I like that the bulb looks whole. For it to burn like that, did you have drill a small whole somewhere into the bulb?

I like the lighting (ha, ha - no pun intended) The smoke looks pretty cool too. Good center composition. Best of luck in the challenge.
