Overall, a very well done environmental portrait.

I think, compositionally, she feels a little tight on the right hand side of the frame. Perhaps if you could have changed your perspective so that you were a foot or so further left, it wouldn't feel so crunched. Another option, which may have been easier in post processing, would be to have more of the garden/plants showing on the left side of the frame.

Technically, it is also very well done. The focus, colors, clarity are all very nice, and the dof that you have used works very well. Her shirt (and the shot overall) is just a touch hot on this monitor, but it may just be the monitor.

Nice shot and best to you in future challenges.

All:

Thank you so much for the great comments. We even got a "Kali Ribbon"... That's awesome! My wife is a bit camera shy so the positive comments are helping quite a bit. Her left hand is in a cast so she was giving me all kinds of reasons not to be in the photo. She loves her garden but due to her injury...I dug the holes and planted all the trees while she supervised. I had her hide her broken hand behind the bushes. I put a piece of cardboard down on the ground, had her put on a glove and pretend she did all the work. That's probably why she looks so happy. She has her manicured yard while sitting on the back porch giving instruction and sipping a glass of wine.

Thanks again.

I'm so happy this did well and that it has its fans. In a field of extreme closeups and fierce or somber expressions (many of which I liked very much, btw), this environmental portrait was like a breath of fresh air. I love your wife's warm, contented expression. Oh yeah, watch your spelling, especially in a title! ;-)

Wow! Pretty healthy spread between commenters avg score, and the end result; 7.4286 vs 6.0231!

Congrat's on your first 6.xxx, and a new personal best! :-)

This is an unusual pose, but I really like it because is lets us see into the gardener's avocation. Nicely framed. I could have used a little shallower DOF. Resting her chin on the spade is great!

This may not score real high here, but I hope it does. Highlights seem a little blown out. I like your depth of field, and composition. I also like the fact you seem to have shot this from a low angle.

very nice...but background a bit busy...might have cropped it in a bit more.

Nice portrait...good composition. Shoulders are overexposed due to the white shirt. A neutral density filter helps in those occasions and perhaps slightly correcting for the UV blues. Good luck.

My favourite of this challenge for the interest, engagement between viewer and subject, and composition. Work very well. 9.

I like this pose because it works on many different levels. It really tells a story about who this person is and what they enjoy.

This would be perfect for an "environmental portrait" challenge. But then again, that's a special category of a portrait, so you're still right here. 8.

nice environmental portrait. To nitpick, if the shoulders could be toned down a bit as they and her right arm are a bit blown. However, the face and background look great.

perfect example of a WONDERFULLY executed environmental portrait. there's nothing wrong with this image whatsoever. it looks like something off the cover of better homes and gardens. seriously, great job. 7
