This is the background I used for this image:

Here's a variation on this background:

It's a picture through a stack of empty 5gal. water jugs that has been colorized, twisted, waved and a few other tortures I don't recall.

This is the water jug original:

I made this background using Jasc's Paint Shop Pro (which might explain why this is hard to reproduce) but similar results can be reached with Photoshop too. I started off by altering the color to get as much contrast as possible. Many of the 'artistic effects' in PSP do this very well. With Photoshop you might try selectively combining the channel mixer, Hue/Saturation, and some selective colors. It's just important not to lose the texture in the image or it starts looking very static.

I've added chaos to the swirl in a couple of ways. You can just twirl the image and then add some waves (ripple in PSP). The most interesting results I've gotten have been from twirling the image a small amount (perhaps 180-200 degees at a time), then add a subtle wave with medium wavelengths and small amplitude, go back and twirl again and just keep repeating the process until it looks the way you want it to.

The 'wave' function in photoshop serves the function of the 'ripple' effect in PSP. The trouble is, photoshop does not (so far as I know) have something that works exactly like the PSP ripple in which perfectly circular waves are generated from the center of the image. So, I can't exacly reproduce this with photoshop.
