I would like to thank everyone that left comments on this shot both during and after the challenge. I truly did not know if the golden tones would be accepted as orange...

A little background. This is the dome of Michigan's Capital Building. I have shot this building during several other challenges, but always from the outside. A few weeks back I took my son into the building. This was the first time I'd been there in 20 years. I had totally forgotten how cool this building is. I am going to be going there at least once a week for the next 6 months. I want to learn the building as I learn how to photograph architecture!

I did very little to this shot. Levels, curves, desaturated slightly the master in hue/saturation, boosted slightly the red and yellow saturations to make the orange a touch more orange, resized, sharpened, saved for web.

You can bet on seeing more of this building in the next few weeks and months.

Thanks again for all the kind comments!

Yours
TC

How could anyone give this a score of one? Has anyone left thier keyboards alone during voting with their cat or infant in the room? Surely this couldn't be a result of someone seeing the work and thinking it warrents the lowest score possible!

Ohh Ron,

so close to the ribbon :( Really nice shot.

Why did you use Olympus when you have 300D?

I thought this was the winning shot. Incredible sharp details. Closer crop would probably be given higher scores, but I like the way you cropped it currently.

The outer cycle frames the orange details in the center well and makes your eyes focus on it. Loves the stars.

Beautiful work! I am shocked this did not ribbon. I am also shocked at the number of 1s, 2s, and 3s. Come on people!

Anyway, congrats on a great finish.

Jaw dropping depth, with great detail and color. The square crop works very well to pull the eye in to the center. The only knock ( and that is very slight ) is that the percentage of area in the shot that is orange is a bit low. Great shot, makes me want to see this building, you make it sing.

Very calming and warm feel. I don't mind the contrast between the lower and upper sections but some might not like it. This photo is so easy to look at. Well done.

This one works. Everything in sharp focus, and the off-centre circle of the dome
is almost three-dimensional.

I like your effort here with a realy difficult shot. I try this concept eveuy time that I'm in one of the grand atherdals, and their tough. It looks like have gone to great pains to acheive perfect cropping and balance, and still the viewer is pulled slightly to left. It feels kind of awkward, and I have no suggestions to give.

The lighting inside the dome is incredible. The eye is drawn immediately to the circle at the top of the dome. Even though there are several blown areas they are not distracting due to the strength of the rest of the image.
