Superb! Love the lighting and the sharpness. I would be very keen to know what kind of processing went into this.

Congrats Irene although you are probably tired of another honorable mention/star. I'm surprised you still haven't passed me in average yet. You're whipping me in everything else though.

And I thought you would come up with Professional Water Dropper.
Your skills gained seem to be transferrable, Big Dipper.

Getting tired of experiments in the kitchen? ;) This is an awesome portrait. The lighting is great and the expression very emotional. It might have been a little bit better if it included some matching environment (a tunnel or at least parts of a tunnel wall, for example) in the background.

Again?!? With all those recent stars on your profile, you should qualify as your own constellation by now. I shall call it the Big Dripper.

Nice one!

would have been better if all of the helmet was in the picture. This is a great shot otherwise although I personally was looking for an external environment and not just a hat and some dirt on the face for this challenge.

Great grittiness and super contrast.
Excellent portrait.

I'm really not sure what to do with this. Probably, the best capture of the subject in the entire challenge. This is haunting, emotional, well-framed, shading/lighting is stunning...then I say to myself "what is the environment?" I look at the title for a clue, shift worker, so he works at night. But what does he do? He wears a hard-hat and is dirty, no real clue there. So then I ask myself "is this an environmental portrait?" Not in the strict definition of the genre. But this shot is fabulous and it is a portrait. There are elements of environment, the hat and dirt obvioulsy aren't props...I honestly have no idea how to rank this shot.

Very well done. The border doesn't do much; it's almost seamless except around his hat which momentarily pulls attention away from your subject. A seven for you.

Unfortunately (if that is the right word to use) this portrait is so good that it actually looks like a studio shot with a made up model rather than of a shift worker in their natural environment. I am sure this is an image that the voters will either love or take a tad of glee in telling you that it does not meet the challenge. From my own perspective I am just really inpressed by the the muted colours and the sharpness of the subject

Excellent portrait

Great pose and facial expression, great lighting. I'd like to see a little bit of background to get a better feel of where he is. 7

one of the best in the challenge, perfect exposure, good crop. his expression looks very natural, the processing emphasizes the dirtiness of his job.

I like the tones

The only envornment in the shot is the smutz on the fellow's face, but it is a lovely shot, well lit and the uniformity of grtty textues from his facial hair to the scratches on his hard hat make this a very strong portrait.

coal miner? very gritty and real, yet very simple, 7

this is the best in challenge, IMO. Wanna see it in the top 3!
Fantastic tones. His expression is wonderful. Love to see so many details: dirt in his face, textures, etc. Very good focus, too. - You've done a really good job! Good luck!

Lovely portrait, excellent lighting and I really like the black background and the black shirt. But where is his environment? I would love to see where/how he works. I am sorry, but a safety hat and some dust on his face does not tell me enouhg about him.

Great pic, very subtle black on black, great lighting and facial expression. I would have liked a little more environment though, this might as well be a studio shot.

Loved the photo. Eagarly looked at the title. Was he a miner or some other noble job. Shift worker? What is that?

Cropping the helmet did not work for me.

Strong portrait and composition. The sharpening is nicely done, along with the rest of the processing. The lighting is also very well done and adds a dramatic feel to the shot. My only problem with rating this is that the makeup or dirt on the face and the hat are really what connects with the title, rather than the environment as the challenge suggested. Therefore, I give this a 6
