Challenge: Reflections Without Mirrors (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S30
Location: Lounge, My house, Sandbach, Cheshire, UK
Date: Sep 29, 2002
Aperture: f/8.0
ISO: auto
Shutter: 8"
Galleries: Interior, Persuasive
Date Uploaded: Sep 29, 2002

With any luck you can tell that this is a reflection in the screen of a switched-off TV. I had the idea that I'd like to portray someone preferring to turn off the TV and read a book. The lighting was tricky here and so was the framing. Getting sufficient depth of field to have the TV and myself (the reader) in focus meant having a small aperture and very long exposure time - 8 seconds! I just had to keep very very still.

Very cool.

Quite clever... this is one of those images that has some deeper meaning outside of simply finding something that has a reflective surface. Great job!

Well done, great idea. I think cropping out the speaker on the tv (right) would've been better though.

Looks almost like a painting ... you should work this idea, and perhaps have some kind of victorian character in that pose ... very nice effect! -8

Very high-quality reflection. Don't think I could pull this off with my T.V. My only complaint is that your light source is visible and doesn't really fit with the picture - 8.

My much preferred method of entertainment. I like the commentary here. Good work. 7, just-married

Great lighting, fine colors and, above all, some meaning and expression, a real statement. The TV's brand detracts a bit from the image, but beyond that, it's a 9.

I like the TV vs. Literature theme here. And Lit. wins for a change! Nice colour, painterly effect. Sharp.

What a beefcake! ;)
Like the curved distortion. Not sure on composition - feels like the bit of the TV included is a bit arbitrary - I would also prefer the vertical at right to be more so.

Wow, this is really great! The amount of color is wildly fantastic. I have mixed feelings about the framing of the TV, but I am assuming it this way to include the TV manuf. as to clarify this is not a mirror, so it has to be this way. This could be your best work to date. 9 Swash!

I really think I would have liked it much better with the edges of the TV cropped out of the shot. The reflection is really pretty cool, and has a nice "old world" feel to it. ( No I'm not talking about your age, or what looks like gray in your beard! LOL;) )The reflection has the nice soft, warm, aged looked that old paintings get. lhall-7

More interesting than you would expect. The softening of the reflection by the TV screen and restricted light make it look more like a painting

This is a very clear reflection. One of the best in the bunch. It's excellent for this challenge tho I'm not sure how much appeal it has outside of the challenge. Technically great. Meets challenge for sure. ~indigo997

Excellent idea and cool reflective photo. At work (I'm a nurse), I was showing the pictures from the challenge to my co-workers. My fellow nurses all commented about how edematous the person's arm was and that it should be looked at by a doctor. I had to laugh because that was before they realized that it was caused by distortion of the reflection in the TV screen. LOL Just thought I would share that with you.

Looks very much like a painting. I though about this all week but couldn't quite put my finger on how to pull it off. Great job! DPz
