Thanks for the comments. It doesn't seem to matter what I enter in these free studies, the results are always the same. If anybody would like to give me an honest critique please do.

I forgot to mention, kudos to Dirt_Diver for some feedback/help he gave me in doing this image.

I didn't vote in this challenge but I like this photo more than some of the photos that scored higher. I don't know about your other photos as much but to me this one and still life in general has a very hard time ribboning in a free study, as good as it may be. It seems to me like landscape/sky/and a few portraits make it to the top in free studies consistently. As far as still life goes this is as good as it gets and 19th place out of 455 proves that. For those that rated below 5.5 and didn't leave feedback is mostly likely because there is nothing technically wrong with the photo, but simply that they don't "dig" this kind of photo. Don't lose heart, your one of my favorite photographers on here because of your style (esp. the muted colors!) Keep it up!

Gotta go with Jorge on this. The lighting is top class and it's also totally beautiful. This is definitely not constructive criticism but I just had to tell you how much I like it.

Hey man thanks. I knew it was a good image the second I saw it. At first I thought you would get pinged for the little light that was coming through at the bottom but I don't think anyone even saw it. 19th is AMAZING for a FS. I can think of 436 other people that would LOVE to be in 19th place???

I think the only reason why you got 19th was because there isn't really any action going on here. No real WOW factor ya know. Don't get me wrong it's a PERFECT picture IMO but it's a simple picture. I guess the average of everyone that voted thought that the other 18 images were more interesting. Only real problem is there can only be one 1st in every challenge. Sorry you didn't get it but honestly it's an amazing picture. You should add it to DPC Prints. I think you could sell this one.

I know finishing 19th is pretty good for a free study so I'm not upset about that. I'm just a little frustrated in general that I haven't been able to improvement much in the 23 free studies I've entered so far. I've just been stuck finishing at around the same range each time and haven't really gotten any constructive feedback in the process. Nearly 20% of the voters thought this was a below average shot (i.e. less than 5.5). There's nothing wrong with that. It just tells me there are different opinions out there and would like to hear from them. I check 99.9% of all comments I get as helpful because they are. So don't feel like you have to hold back.

Your photographs are wonderful, and this one is no exception. The color, lighting, everything seems just right. With 455 entries in a free study, I think 19th is exceptional. Ha, I'll trade you...my PERFECT duck photo finished 241st!

Having entered a few still life shots in a free study...Top20 is great m8. A few FS ago you made the top6 ;) More than a 6.6 in a Free Study for a still life is really good. I wouldn't change anything about this one. Will look beautiful on glossy.

A very nice shot and one that would look great as a poster or canvas print.

like I said. Amazing. Perfect. Don't change anything. the picture is worth more than its score. This is a typical exemple where you should look at the quality beyond the DPC score which has its limitations.

19th out of 455 - nothing for you to be upset about. You placed very nicely, but most of all you have an awesome image. Frame this and hang it on your wall with pride.

I like the warmth of this. It's perfectly presented. Clean, crisp, nice light to provide depth, creative. It's a top 20, and the commenter score is well above 8. It's not a sweeping wide-angle landscape, does not involve a sunset or northern lights or a crystal clear reflection of a dramatic sky. 99.5% of us can't achieve what you do with shots like this. The other 0.5% includes IreneM - she's the one you need to ask.

Lovely lighting. I love that the little sapling is safe and snug and reaching up to the light.

The lighting on this is perfect. I love the orange glow. I may have cloned out a few spots on the glass but other than that it is perfect. I even like the centered composition. Great job! 9

great composition and colors. Original subject/idea. Very good lighting (behind, the leaves, but also on each sides of the vase).
